AN IRISH RUGBY player has been handed a one-year suspension after he inadvertently consumed an energy drink containing a prohibited substance.
Michael Carroll, 30, of Blackrock College RFC tested positive for methylhexaneamine (MHA) in a urine sample collected following a game at Stradbook on 1 October.
A hearing of the Irish Sport Anti-Doping Disciplinary Panel found yesterday that Carroll violated Article 2.1 of the Irish Anti-Doping Rules, though they accepted that he had not intended to enhance his sporting performance.
This morning’s Irish Times reports that Carroll bought ought the offending drink as a boost for work and sport-related fatigue and drank it without realising that it contained a banned substance.
Carroll was suspended for 12 months, ending on 30 September 2012, and has indicated that he will not appeal against the ban.
