VAL ANDREWS HAS resigned as Cavan senior football manager.
Andrews’s position became untenable earlier this week when the senior inter-county squad pressed for a change of manager following their disappointing National Football League campaign.
Cavan won just two of their seven games in Division 3 and only avoided relegation by virtue of Tipperary’s win against Offaly.
With the blessing of the county board and team management, the players met on Tuesday evening to discuss the fallout from the league campaign and presented a number of issues to county chairman Tom Reilly.
BBC Sport reported that they voted 33-3 in favour of Andrews’s removal, although county sources told the Anglo Celt that only 26 players had attended the meeting.
Andrews’s decision to resign “is yet another example of the genuine interest and love Val Andrews has for Cavan football,” the county board said in this evening’s statement.
“Val feels that for the overall well being of the team which he worked selflessly with, a speedy decision is necessary to afford Cavan County Board every opportunity to make alternative arrangements for the up coming Ulster Senior Football Championship and in doing so he wishes the best for Cavan football.”
Cavan begin their Ulster Championship campaign when they host defending champions Donegal in the first round on 20 May.

Following Cavan’s exit from the Allianz National Football League the senior inter county panel informed the management and board that it was their wish to have a players meeting to analyse their own personal performances from said campaign. The players had the blessing of both management and board to have this meeting.
A number of issues arose from the meeting and following a discussion with Val Andrews he has decided to tender his resignation as Cavan senior team manager with immediate effect.
