OFFALY HAVE APPOINTED Emmet McDonnell to take charge of the county’s senior football panel, it was announced on Saturday.

The Westmeath native was selected by a four-man committee to replace interim manager Tom Coffey.

After presiding over a disappointing Championship campaign which ended with defeat to Tipperary in the first round of the All-Ireland qualifiers, Coffey indicated that he did not wish to be considered for a permanent position with the Faithful.

McDonnell is currently the manager of Meath intermediate side Ballinabrackey and led St Mary’s Secondary School to the All-Ireland Colleges title earlier this season.

His appointment was recommended by the four-man committee of Pat Teehan, Martin Bolan, Fr Sean Heaney and Dave Kavanagh.

“Emmett is wished every success in his appointment from all at Offaly GAA,” a short statement from the county board said.
