ITโS AN ODD time for Eamon OโShea in his role as Tipperary manager.
Knives were being sharpened last month as the spectre of relegation loomed large for his side but a last day survival act saw them wind up in the knockout stages.
Now the garlands are being tossed in OโSheaโs direction after steering Tipperary to yesterdayโs semi-final win over Clare. A second successive league final against Kilkenny beckons.
โIt seems strange to be in a national league final to be honest after the slow start we made (to the league) but the most important thing is the spirit weโre consistently showing in our games.
โOne of the things people didnโt realise when we were losing games was that the team never capitulated. Our hurling wasnโt good but in all the games we played we stayed at it. Some times when your team is doing that itโs probably better than them winning by nine or ten.โ
Thereโs still work to be done though in sharpening Tipperaryโs play according to OโShea.
โWeโre nowhere where we should be in the quickness of our hurling. Itโs a little bit slow. It has developed over the last few weeks, again, not to a level that Iโd be going mad about but itโs certainly developed and theyโve worked very hard.
โItโs just very early in the year to know what patterns are there and the way the game will go. Iโm not sure you could say anything yet. All you had was a good game. Itโs great to play the All-Ireland champions, theyโre a really classic team in the way they want to play the game which is a really good way to play the game. Weโre just happy that we stayed at it.โ
Tipperaryโs rearguard put up a fine showing with Padraic Maher and Brendan Maher manning the spine. That complemented the experience of Michael Cahill and Conor OโMahony along with the youth of Cathal Barrett and James Barry.
OโShea has tweaked his rearguard during the league but insists he hasnโt made wholesale changes.
โI wouldnโt say I did a lot of chopping and changing, I donโt chop and change. I pick the players I have and any player that goes out to play for Tipperary is able to play hurling, I wouldnโt use that phrase. We used players as I saw fit to play, these were quality players.โ
Next up is Kilkenny in Tipperaryโs home patch in Thurles.
โAh itโs good to get another match against Kilkenny,โ admits OโShea. โI didnโt see the first match but weโll look forward to it. Games are the ones that matter, we train too much and play too little at this time of year. The more games the better.โ
You canโt judge league form for the championship. If you win the league you could get hammered in first round of championship! Tipp played well but I canโt see them beating kilkenny in the final. Should be a good game though.
If I recall both of them kk n tip were in
League final last year n gone from champo by Julyโฆ Hard to judge given tightness of div 1.. Tipp could / should have been out if mc marrow had taken his point at endโฆ. Not forgetting how top 2 of last years div 2 performed in the AI โฆ. Just so tight with the top 6-8 teams itโs impossible to judge
Itโs true teams experiment with their teams in the league. But if you look at the last 15-20 years league form carried into the championship. Last year was so exciting because it was totally against the trend.
