Tipp reaching the league final is strange, admits boss Eamon O'shea

The Premier beat the All-Ireland champions Clare to set up a rematch with Kilkenny.

ITโ€™S AN ODD time for Eamon Oโ€™Shea in his role as Tipperary manager.

Knives were being sharpened last month as the spectre of relegation loomed large for his side but a last day survival act saw them wind up in the knockout stages.

Now the garlands are being tossed in Oโ€™Sheaโ€™s direction after steering Tipperary to yesterdayโ€™s semi-final win over Clare. A second successive league final against Kilkenny beckons.

โ€œIt seems strange to be in a national league final to be honest after the slow start we made (to the league) but the most important thing is the spirit weโ€™re consistently showing in our games.

โ€œOne of the things people didnโ€™t realise when we were losing games was that the team never capitulated. Our hurling wasnโ€™t good but in all the games we played we stayed at it. Some times when your team is doing that itโ€™s probably better than them winning by nine or ten.โ€

Thereโ€™s still work to be done though in sharpening Tipperaryโ€™s play according to Oโ€™Shea.

โ€œWeโ€™re nowhere where we should be in the quickness of our hurling. Itโ€™s a little bit slow. It has developed over the last few weeks, again, not to a level that Iโ€™d be going mad about but itโ€™s certainly developed and theyโ€™ve worked very hard.

โ€œItโ€™s just very early in the year to know what patterns are there and the way the game will go. Iโ€™m not sure you could say anything yet. All you had was a good game. Itโ€™s great to play the All-Ireland champions, theyโ€™re a really classic team in the way they want to play the game which is a really good way to play the game. Weโ€™re just happy that we stayed at it.โ€

Tipperaryโ€™s rearguard put up a fine showing with Padraic Maher and Brendan Maher manning the spine. That complemented the experience of Michael Cahill and Conor Oโ€™Mahony along with the youth of Cathal Barrett and James Barry.

Oโ€™Shea has tweaked his rearguard during the league but insists he hasnโ€™t made wholesale changes.

โ€œI wouldnโ€™t say I did a lot of chopping and changing, I donโ€™t chop and change. I pick the players I have and any player that goes out to play for Tipperary is able to play hurling, I wouldnโ€™t use that phrase. We used players as I saw fit to play, these were quality players.โ€

Next up is Kilkenny in Tipperaryโ€™s home patch in Thurles.

โ€œAh itโ€™s good to get another match against Kilkenny,โ€ admits Oโ€™Shea. โ€œI didnโ€™t see the first match but weโ€™ll look forward to it. Games are the ones that matter, we train too much and play too little at this time of year. The more games the better.โ€

You canโ€™t judge league form for the championship. If you win the league you could get hammered in first round of championship! Tipp played well but I canโ€™t see them beating kilkenny in the final. Should be a good game though.

If I recall both of them kk n tip were in
League final last year n gone from champo by Julyโ€ฆ Hard to judge given tightness of div 1.. Tipp could / should have been out if mc marrow had taken his point at endโ€ฆ. Not forgetting how top 2 of last years div 2 performed in the AI โ€ฆ. Just so tight with the top 6-8 teams itโ€™s impossible to judge

Itโ€™s true teams experiment with their teams in the league. But if you look at the last 15-20 years league form carried into the championship. Last year was so exciting because it was totally against the trend.
