Eamon Gilmore targets Waterford manager Davy Fitzgerald for Labour election ticket

Waterford senior hurling manager is reportedly pondering approach from Labour HQ.

HE’S ONE OF the GAA’s most controversial figures.

And he could be on his way to the Dáil, according to the Clare Champion today.

As a talented goalkeeper Davy Fitzgerald won two All-Irelands with the Banner, three Munster titles and four All-Stars.

One of the game’s biggest characters he was invariably a target for opposing fans – or the boo boys as they say in British tabloids -  in Semple Stadium, Croke Park and elsewhere. As Waterford senior hurling manager he continues to pick fights and make headlines.

Now, ‘Fitzy’ may be set for the biggest battle of all: a general election.

Labour leader Eamon Gilmore reportedly believes that the Sixmilebridge man could be the candidate to repeat the feat of Dr Moosajee Bhamjee  -  who won an unlikely seat in 1992.

The newspaper reports:

Leader Eamon Gilmore has targeted Clare as a possible gain in terms of Dáil representation and it is understood that he has approached former All-Star goalkeeper and Waterford manager, Davy Fitzgerald to enter the political ball game.

Communications have been ongoing between both parties over the past few months but Fitzgerald has yet to declare his hand. Efforts to contact him on Wednesday to establish his position failed.

Whatever your political allegiance or hurling loyalties, the prospect of having the intense, vociferous Davy on the Dáil benches is certainly an interesting one.
