Eamon Dunphy: Irish football bosses made a mistake on Trap decision

The FAI announced last night that the Italian manager had their backing.

EAMON DUNPHY SAYS FAI chiefs may live to regret ‘the costly mistake’ of backing under-pressure manager Giovanni Trapattoni last night.

Association chiefs met last night in the capital to discuss the Italian’s future.

They ultimately issued a statement which indicated the former Bayern Munich and Inter Milan manager would be staying on in his job but signalled that changes are needed in his approach.

“I think money is at the heart of it. I think they lost their nerve when it came to making their decision,” Dunphy said this morning of the decision from Abbotstown. ”I think they’ve made a big mistake because he is not going to change his ways.”

“To tell someone who is 73 how to do their job just isn’t going to work especially with someone as distinguished and stubborn as this one. He will not change his spots.

“And what will happen is: our next two games are Sweden away, Austria home. If we lose to Sweden the Aviva is going to be empty for the next couple of years. Because the fans understand the issues here,” the RTE pundit added.

Dunphy added that the impassioned defence mounted by Trap’s former assistant, Liam Brady, after the defeat of the Faroe Islands is based on results against weak opposition.

“I think John Delaney and the FAI and Denis O’Brien made a huge leap of faith and a daring move when they hired this man on one of the biggest salaries in world football,” he told Darren Frehill. “And he has not replayed that faith by going to matches, doing his job properly, making himself aware of these young players, he hasn’t done that.”

“We’ve played Kazakhstan and we beat the Faroes Islands. We got hammered, humiliated when we played Germany last Friday. And you know with so many weak nations in the qualifying groups now it’s very possible to make a very convincing statistical argument – which Liam Brady did the other night with great eloquence on RTE. And Liam made the case for Trapattoni and if I ever get got robbing a bank I want Brady as my defence attorney.

“I think the FAI and John Delaney were in a very tough spot, and they made the wrong call and I think they will pay heavily,” he added.

I’d much prefer to see Delaney go before Trap.

  • I don’t like Dunphy and very rarely agree with him on anything but in this case I think he has a point. Trappatoni is now a lame duck manager from here on in, this classic FAI fudge is only going to make things worse. We have to play Austria and Sweden twice and we have to now beat them to have any chance of getting that second place, can we do that under Trap? I don’t think so, we haven’t beaten a team above us in the rankings under Trap, we lost to France, Russia, Croatia, Italy and Spain, we were hammered by Germany and in all truth we were lucky to beat Kazakhstan. Big deal we beat the part timers of the Faroe Islands 4-1 and if you look at the qualifying rounds for the Euro’s, all our results were against the lower sides. Trap’s ‘system’ was shown up at the Euro’s for what it was and his choice of players is sometimes totally baffling, he never watches his own players and relies on videos and other people to tell him how they have done. It’s no surprise to see Keane, Andrews and O’Dea backing the manager as in reality none of them would feature in say a Harry Redknapp team or even a McCarthy team that matter. Trap is yesterday’s man and the unsurprising decision of the FAI is typical of a bunch of amateurs who are incapable of taking tough decisions. Delaney is just prolonging the inevitable because under the current management Ireland are NOT going to qualify for Brazil 2014. The mistake was made after the Euro debacle. Trap’s contract should never have been renewed and for that Delaney is responsible. When this campaign ends, which will most likely be after we have screwed up against Austria and Sweden in the upcoming double header in March next year then we will be stuck with Trap until his contract ends and we will still be no better off and worse out of the world cup. Delaney and the ‘FAI chiefs’ should all be sacked for missing out an opportunity to reignite our chances of qualification when they had the chance by replacing Trap, who cares what Brady says, he’s Trap’s mate anyway so he would want him to stay wouldn’t he!

  • Brady conveniently forgets that we also lost ALL THREE of our games at the euros. Keeps saying we lost two qualifying games. Look at how many goals we’ve conceded in these defeats and it doesn’t look good for the Sweden and Austria games.

  • It’s hard to say what is right going forward, however it’s easy to say that what we see now is awful. No passion in the Irish international game at all! People can say that the quality of players is not there and that is true to a degree. However, motivation, commitment , passion and determination are all things the manager is suppose to bring to the team and that’s clearly not happening. A manager talking down his team, that’s just wrong! If we are going to lose based on quality of player, I would at least like to see us lose having given it our all!

  • I agree Terry but I feel that this qualification should have been used to build towards 2016. Because 2 teams from each group will get automatic qualification we have a great chance of qualifying. If we started to mould a young team now, we might even have a team capable of competing.

The problem now is that Trap could conceivably leave a mess and and whoever replaces him will be rebuilding again in 2014. That’s why I think Trap should go…

  • Ah Stockholm in March, O Dea putting manners on Zlatan , Cox burning up the wing,Whelan lording midfield, captain Keane bringing a touch of Hollywood……clapTrap!
Time to show FAI fans are not sheep, whose views are ignored and support taken for granted.
Boycott Greece game, vote with your feet and stay away, show the FAI that keeping Trap also has financial consequences.

According to the papers, the players wanted trap to stay and told the FAI so, when you drill down, it seems the players were Andrews, O Dea and Robbie Keane. If these three are dictating who manages us, we really are in trouble. These lads have done well for themselves under Trap and probably shouldn’t be in the team on current form but how can he drop them now, ridiculous way to run an organisation.
I wonder if Long, Clarke, Gibson and Kelly went canvasing in the FAI would they be supporting Trap or be listened to.

  • Its not only Trap who is the problem its also Delaney and any attempts to sack either of them would be the same as trying to get Kenny and Gilmore out of office. And its all because of their large incomes. There is no problem in other countries sacking people who are not doing their jobs properly but here in Ireland the people with the big incomes would tell you what to do with yourself if you tried to put them out.

  • Dunphy is right. I have some money put aside to go to Sweden in March. It will be my one holiday of the year and normally I wouldn’t even think twice. This time I’m worried that it will be depressing and I’ll regret it for the rest of the year.

I know I’ll go anyway but I’m not expecting much…

  • Thing is we drove someone from the job this time 10 years ago and we ended up in 3 qualification campaigns finishing outside the top 2. The FAI and Trap need to sit down and go over whats been done wrong over the last couple of years, i.e communication with players, relectance to give debuts, and try and resolve these issues. If something like this does’nt happen before the next qualifier then all these people are just money sucking parasites.

  • Copy cat RTE with their lineup on sports for soccor matches. Overpaid and unprofessional. Give this guy a mirror for his own career. He earns more than the rest of them.

  • The next phase of the qualifiers is likely to see the return of dunne, doyle and whelan. Hopefully Robbie will be graceful enough to make way for doyle. The game against Sweden could be a revival. I hope they can get a new manager in good time for the qualifiers for EURO 2016. That should be the goal. Knee jerk reactions too often end in tears.
