“The fans are the people who generate the money, interest and the passion to pay Roy Keane’s wages for a very long time,” Dunphy said.

“To turn on them like that was very wrong at that moment. They were making the best of a bad situation. To say the Irish just want to party and sing songs is an unfair characterisation of Irish people.
I think they’ve been brilliant in the way they accepted defeated and made the best of standing in the rain watching their country being destroyed after paying big money to go there.
“Those people deserve to be respected and celebrated – not attacked by Roy Keane.”
First time in my life I’ve ever agreed with Dunphy. Keane is very willing to take the fans money, and has done for years, but can’t wait to have a nasty little dig whenever he gets the chance. and well done Fabrice Muamba, Robin Van Persie and all the rest of the footballing community who praised the Irish fans for their passion and behaviour. keane is a disgrace.
Poor Roy, he comes across as such a troubled, difficult and joyless soul, saddled with an immovable chip on his shoulder. His aura is all wrong. I can only imagine the self-loathing…….either that or he justs craves negative attention.
roy judas keane is a big mouth tw@t and someone who seems to know absolutely nothing about managing a team of players, as he has consistently proved with his ridiculous efforts in the english leagues, i will never have any time for him
Dumphy playing the popular pr*ck & talking shite… Keane was responding to a question from the presenter who had suggested that it’s an old trick to praise the victors & fans. Keane says as he sees it & although he is not always right he is this time & he did not turn on the fans he turned on this stupid “we are great fans, listen to us singing” sh*te. Irish fans are amazing & should be praised but the topic we should be discussing is the fact that we were atrocious as a team in both games & not looking to slate a former player who is as much loved as he is hated because he said what he said. Some of the comments here are disgraceful,
Its a rare occasion that I agree with Dunphy. In this instance he is 100% correct. Who is Roy Keane to say how Irish fans should or shouldn’t react. Unlike some of our neighbours we didn’t try rip up the stadium or throw bottles at our defeated team. The fans sang for the team out of respect for them trying their best. This Ireland squad is one of the weakest I can remember, and we were going up against the best team in the world. Any one who expected a draw even was dreaming.
Never before have I understood the chant “you’ll never beat the irish” until I saw what happened last night. You might beat our team but you’ll never beat what it is to be Irish. Professional footballers and average joe soaps from the other euro nations are saddened to see our team get knocked out because the fans are going home.
So its not sad or pathetic, it makes me proud that we can conduct ourselves in such a peaceful way, even after getting hammered. We encourage mixing of nations through having a good time and a laugh. Anyone who has a problem with that probably doesn’t lead a very fulfilling life.
So Roy Keane can F*** Off….he ditched Ireland in 2002. It was his choice. He always will be one of our best players, no doubting the skill and experience he could have given to Ireland. Maybe if he had of stayed, he could have had input into how our squad developed since then. It was his choice not to.
We might be out, but we can still play for pride in the Italy game. Once we are home after that match, its time to start saving for Brazil!
it is a kip, it might not be for you but it is where i am, 20% unemployment + another summer of rain * all the young people emigrating (2 more of my friends this week so far) = major K I P
Saw Dunphy speak on the Late Late that night. It was fairly evident that he was referring to the state the country was in and the politicians that had contributed to it. I thought he spoke with feeling and not with the #PositiveIreland inc government spin that George Hook came out with the following week.
it is a kip, ireland was once a great place but is now a kip. im irish born and bred to irish parents. i wont be able to jump ship and emigrate due to illness, but as soon as my mother passes away ill be soon after her.
oh and yes roy keane was correct to say that. you need a drill instructor to get that team into gear and learn to play like the germans.
Ireland is far from a kip. One of the most beautiful countries on earth . Great people , one of the highest standards of living in the world. No kip is not the first thing that comes to mind.
I love how all these people dwell on negative comments and seemingly agree that Ireland is a “kip”. Go live in any city in the UK apart from London (they are for the best part post-industrial backwaters). Go live in the racist banlieues of Paris. Go live in overpopulated, polluted (to a certain extent) China/India. Even the states have massive problems (Healthcare, education). No sense of community there.
You would soon change your tune should you live in one the above places and pay taxes for god awful sytems.
Ireland is one of the greatest countries to live in both aesthetically and for the best part economically (lets be honest, if majority of people can afford €9.20 for a luxury item such as smokes it’s not exactly famine times) if you try hard enough. €188 a week for doing nothing isn’t a bad way to get back on your feet should you fall on hard times.
Granted I know that €188 a week isn’t enough for small families etc, but the majority of people verbally knocking Ireland are probably still living at home, without any further education past their leaving cert, claiming the dole, and not contributing in anyway to this country. Using the “the government f*cked us over” mentality doesn’t help anyone. Tell us something we dont know. They may well have, but theres absolutely nothing you can do about it now, so get over it and move on. If you don’t like it, save up money and leave.
The negativity in this country just kills me, and is far worse than the state of the economy/government. I’d leave Ireland alone just to get away from the echoes of those same Irish people who bemoan our country.

Dunphy is just playing the popular card. All the Irish idiots caught up in this delusional euphoria are blinded to the truth. I agree with Roy. We have a Loser Mentality. Its an Irish mentality found only in Ireland. We celebrate this. It is shameful.
Really, an Irish mentality only found in Ireland, where else would you expect to find an IRISH mentality? Regardless of whether one agrees with your sentiment or not perhaps a bit of thought before one types!
Ah I love how all the Roy Keane lick arses refer to him as “Roy”. Like they are buddies on first name terms. “Roy” might HAVE been a good footballer but it still doesn’t mean he isn’t a pr**k. “Roy” is a nobody now that he is finished playing. People have begun to forget he exists. Just like Dunphy, there is nothing like saying something controversial to get your name back in the papers.
Its funny how any of the foreign media outlets seem to just have good things to say about the Irish fans. I’d have no problem to with “Roy” if he just said the team was terrible because that wouldn’t be far from the truth. But to call the fans, pathetic and losers? Its not needed. Would you rather mope around and be depressive after a match or just appreciate getting there and have a good time while you’re away from the depressing atmosphere at home.
To all the people who think Ireland is a kip. There are plenty of flights and ferries off the country for you to find somewhere which you think is better. Leave the country to the people who do not think this is a kip so we can try and build a better country.
Why Rodrigo I live here don’t think the place is a kip. I’m well aware the place has its problems . Is it because I don’t agree with your belief that the place is a kip. Born here grew up here and I’m bringing up a child here. Not a kip in my book.
Well said Emmet! I’m getting sick of people moaning about this country so much. Can’t read a sports or entertainment article without someone moaning about this country. Get out of here if you hate it so much. If they would.just leave it will free up jobs or cut down on the dole queue. Our country is awesome. You’ll never fully appreciate it until you’ve lived abroad for a significant amount of time.
Well said Emmet. If you don’t like the place then either do something positive and change it or on yer bike. Take your bitterness and negativity someone else. Its no addition to the people who are trying to build a life here.
You can’t fault the players lack of passion. Lack of skill and belief maybe, but not passion. What Richie Dunne did in Moscow is on a par to Keane’s performance v Holland in 2001. Any real Irish fan knew we were onto a hiding in this comp. Qualification was a massive achievement considering our team contains aging legends and average pros. The singing fans crave success but are clever enough to respect our limitations. Don’t u always here Liverpool fans sing You’ll Never Walk Alone when defeated. It’s a pride thing Roy. You wouldn’t understand.
Someone please give Keane a job to keep him quiet until August!nHe’s been mouthing off since May to get his name in the papers in the vain hope of managing a team.nBirmingham, Villa, Liverpool, Swansea, Norwich and now Spurs all had vacancies and Keane’s name hasn’t been on the short list for any of them, he’s turning into a bitter self publicist…much like Dunphy ;)
Have a look at what Roy said again, and the way he said it, he was furious with the team as the whole country should be. I don’t really think he was having a pop at the fans he said make no mistake the fans wanna see us win let’s not just go there for the sing song, I for one am so proud of the fans and only wish I was there to join in with it, but Roy Keane is 100% right as usual, the problem is he dosnt sugar coat it and that’s why he offends so many people and probably why he’ll never make a good manager, he dosnt respect people’s feelings I can’t ever imagine him putting an arm around a player who’s down on himself he’s gruff and yes a bit of a lunatic but I don’t think I’ve ever disagreed with his assessments on football empathy and sympathy are bullshit to him Roy deals in facts and fact is the team were a complete disgrace
I know Roy Keane isn’t making any friends for himself @ the moment, but the real problem is he takes football very seriously & is a perfectionist..he worked hard when he played for Man Utd & expects the same from everyone else.. I don’t think Roy was hitting out at the fans, he just wanted to see some effort from the players and in fairness, we saw nothing of that.. It’s obvious to every football pundit out there, including Roy Keane, that it cost the Irish fans a small fortune to travel & attend these matches.. They deserved more and that’s what Roy was trying to say I guess..
Keane is right. We are a bunch of losers. It was a football match not fing pop idol. Why should we slap ourselves on the back for being such good losers. Let’s try and win something instead!
Think lot of ye are missing the point here. Roy keane didn’t criticise the fans. What he was on about is the the hammering Ireland got and the fans singing away as if it was something to celebrate. He’s point was the fans should of demanded more of the team. Ireland didn’t show up at all forget the class deference there was just no spirit or hunger from the team.
So stop yet stupid comments about it getting all mixed up with media hype.
Plus trap has to go the squad selection was a disgrace and team selection was sh#t. McLean and Gibson along with long should of started. We all know that plus Coleman should of been there aswell don’t take a genius to look at the stats and see who’s inform and can get at teams and create chances.
Worst irish team ever and I would not of been singing if I was there last nite. Was disgusted to the point I wanted to be sick watching it. An Eircom 11 team would of done better.
Why should anybody get out of this country if they are not happy with things? Why shouldn’t they stay and complain and try to put things right?
Why should I run away?
Oh no. Emigrate and leave the country to those who think its a great place.
I love this country and detest this country in equal measures.
No one is saying get out if you are not happy with the situation. I am not happy with the situation but I try and make a positive difference every day. Its the keyboard whingers that are welcome to leave-the people who moan and take the negative out of every situation but do nothing about it. They expect someone else to make it all better but the reality is it will never be right for them anyway as they are always looking for something to complain about.
basically that d**khead slated the fans for supporting THEIR team? Really? That despicable man who walked away from his team and fans who followed and supported him. Keane is full of shite. I’m proud so very proud to be Irish. Fair enough our team wasn’t great but they got into the euros.
When you follow a football team. You follow them through the ups and downs wins and losses.
Well done to every fan that went to support their national team and sang their little hearts out. Because it was to say they support THEIR team regardless.
I never heard Keane moan about fans when they supported Ireland in Italy, US and Siapan. So he can go and F**k off for himself. He’s a hasbeen now. no one want his unless its Alex Ferguson who wants him to kick his arse.
Shame on him.
And regards to everyone posting about how bad this county is. Yeah its not in a good way at the moment but we’ve come back before and hopefully we will again.
Dunphy’s a thick. Keane didn’t slag off the Irish fans (who were class by the way), he was responding to the usual patronising and condescending remarks of “how great the fans are” after another shambolic performance.
Well he is English!
Am I missing something?
He’s not Swedish.
In fairness to him he has never played down his Irish connection.
He played 39 times for us.
But, more to the point, he is English.
He would be more hypocritical if denied that.
Why shouldn’t the fans do what the fans want to do? Who is answerable to Roy Keane? Who cares what he thinks?
I don’t think the team lacked effort.
I think they were beaten by better teams. Pure and simple.
I wouldn’t be singing if we lost but that’s my way. Who am I or Roy Keane to tell any fan what to do? They spent their hard earned money to go there.
They are far more committed fans than I and many more.

seems to be a popular picture today conor…
This coming from the guy who called Ireland a “kip” on the Late Late…
it is a kip, it might not be for you but it is where i am, 20% unemployment + another summer of rain * all the young people emigrating (2 more of my friends this week so far) = major K I P
Mick Wallace still a TD! Mick Wallace still at liberty! = KIP!!!

Dunphy is a Muppet .
Keano was only telling the truth.
we were playing agaiast the best side in the world wen nd if u become a footballer then u can say they r shite until then shut up
Seany, you are only agreeing with Keane because you live in a united house boy. The mans one sandwich short of a picnic
@condon. When will you realise we are an average team. We live in hope. So just support ur team

Well said Dunphy.
Dunphy’s gone soft in his old age. I’m not a Roy fan but he was right, if the team had half as much passion as the fans we’d be ok
You wouldn’t understand.
good man Davy Soup.thats literally the best comment I’ve seen here
Roy Keane couldn’t manage a good sh#te. He’s a traitorous loser with a very elevated opinion of himself. He wouldn’t get a job with a conference team.
Are players are not good enough to win anything fool. This is the best they can do so just support them no matter what
If you weren’t over in Poland you would never understand!
You deserve a good petting
Problem is Trap is going nowhere
I agree with Dunphy, however, Dunphy is full of crap also and will go with whatever maintains his profile.nThey are made for each other.
Why should anybody get out of this country if they are not happy with things? Why shouldn’t they stay and complain and try to put things right?
Why should I run away?
Oh no. Emigrate and leave the country to those who think its a great place.
I love this country and detest this country in equal measures.
I can see things from your perspective and understand it. I wasn’t suggesting that we shouldn’t criticise things, otherwise nothing would improve.
Just can’t stand people who moan about things but make no effort to make the situation better.
But why does everything have to turn into a political/economic bashing session about the country . This is a sports article!
Now would someone listen the 20 years of punditry by Dunphy, and tell us if people in glass houses can throw stones?
Who is Eamon Dunphy?nDid he used to play football?
Any country that allows the likes of Mick Wallace have a say in how it’s run is a Kip!!
Instead of moaning about it, get up off your arse and do something about it.
This has absolutely NOTHING to do with Mick Wallace you mentaller.
Is there not a chance that Roy Keane is telling the bitter truth?
Irish soccer has gone downhill- now it seems the be just an occasion to have a party and drown our sorrows?
Do we want to progress in soccer, or return to the ‘magnificent in defeat’ days?
Especially when it’s only the fans who are magnificent in defeat!
basically that d**khead slated the fans for supporting THEIR team?
^lick fergies arse again.^
Oh no – he’s at it again … Mark Lawrenson is on BBC commenting on Sweden/ England and he keeps saying “we”. Thought you were one of us Mark?
I always think the same thing when I hear every second Irish soccer fan using ‘we’ when talking about ‘English’ clubs.
Roy Keane , great player , but knob jockey Irish man , get the builders in to take the massive chip off your shoulder Roy
Not good enough Ray. Don’t personalise your comments. I am not a fool
They are far more committed fans than I and many more.
we won the sing song 10-3
