Eamon Dunphy: 'If I were the Glazers, I'd sack David Moyes'

The football pundit does not have faith in the Scot to turn Manchester United’s current slump around.

RTÉ FOOTBALL PUNDIT Eamon Dunphy does not believe David Moyes is the man to arrest the slump that has Manchester United in danger of completely missing out on European football next season.

Speaking on 2FM’s Game On, the former Ireland international showed some sympathy for the Scot who is struggling in his first season as United boss. The league champions lost 3-0 to Liverpool at Old Trafford on Sunday and are 18 points behind league-leading Chelsea.

Dunphy admitted it may be rash to dismiss Moyes after only six months in charging. He said, as a football fan, he would deplore such a dismissal. However, when he looked at United’s long-term future, Dunphy reasoned that Moyes was not the man to steer the team out of troubled waters.

He said, “They will have to get big players and spend big money. Would you give David Moyes £200m or £300m to spend? The answer is no.”

If he gets the money and makes a mess out of [the transfers], as he has made a mess of the club so far, the money is gone, you won’t be in the Champions League the next season and you’re in a mess.”

Dunphy also criticised United chief executive Edward Woodward for his role in two underwhelming transfer windows and said the Glazer family, who own the club, have a crucial decision to make. He added, “If I were the Glazers, I’d sack him. Could you trust him with the future of Manchester United for the next five years?”

“I’m reluctant to say it,” continued Dunphy, “but if I were on the [United] board, I’d do it.” The pundit also stated his belief that United ‘have no good players’, have an old squad and that no football manager would be able to right United’s course in less than three seasons.
