DUBLIN’S KEVIN O’BRIEN could be set for a spell on the sidelines after suffering a serious knee injury in a Sigerson Cup game this afternoon.
O’Brien was forced off towards the end of his Dublin IT side’s quarter-final defeat against UUJ at Parnells GAA club in Coolock.
He was in severe pain after damaging his right knee near the sideline and was taken to Beaumount Hospital to get the injury assessed.
“It looked as if there was a slight collision and he may have caught himself with one of our own players”, revealed DIT manager Sean Fox afterwards. “It was purely accidental. We just hope he’s okay. It’s a worry that it might be serious.
“Word has it that it wasn’t great. Our physio was there and straight away was saying it wasn’t good. We’d wish him the best and that’s where our thoughts are now. He’s a big part of the Dublin setup.”
O’Brien captained the Dublin U21 footballers to win the All-Ireland title in 2012 with a final win over Roscommon. Last year he burst onto the senior scene and started for Jim Gavin’s Sam Maguire winning team in the Leinster final again Meath, the All-Ireland quarter-final against Cork and the All-Ireland semi-final against Kerry.
The Naomh Mearnóg club man also lined out in defence last year as part of the DIT side that won the Sigerson Cup in Athlone with a final victory over UCC.
