WITH A SPOT in both the All Ireland hurling and football semi finals, many Dublin fans are beginning to believe that they might just become the first team in 23 years to win the double.
Coincidentally, the last side to do so is the one they take on today, Cork.
However, since that glorious (for Leesiders) summer of 1990, no team has managed to lift both the Sam Maguire and Liam MacCarthy cups in the same year, though these five have come closer than most:
1999 Cork

Seán Óg Ó hAilpín was attempting his own personal double this year and while Cork experienced success in the hurling – a 13-12 win over Kilkenny gave them their first title since 1990 – a Trevor Giles inspired Meath were to deny them in the football.

In 2001 Alan Kerins won the Sam Maguire coming on as a sub for the Tribesmen in their defeat of Meath. However, the double dream had ended earlier that September when Tipperary beat them in the hurling decider.
2005 Cork

Cork completed a double of sorts in 2005 when they lifted the Liam MacCarthy cup for the second year in a row. However, the footballers had already been hammered by arch-rivals Kerry in the football semi finals.
2010 Cork

Cork defeated Down in Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh’s last game as a commentator to end a twenty year wait for an All Ireland football title. Dual star Eoin Cadogan was also part of the Cork hurling squad which crashed out to Kilkenny in the semi finals that year.

Sunday marks the second time in three years the blues have reached the semi finals of both championships. However, while they won the football, a four point loss to Tipperary in the hurling semi final put paid to any double dreams.
Are these tales of last gasp disappointment a warning for today or motivation? Only time will tell.

If we’re going by final and semi final appearances, cork have had a lot more chances than that to go by..
Criteria was a win in one competition and at least a semi-final spot in the other since 1990.
If I’ve missed anyone, I’d be happy to include them but I don’t think I have.
