Dream draws for Niland and Sorensen at US Open

TWO MONTHS AFTER Conor Niland fell agonisingly short of a meeting with Roger Federer at Wimbledon, the Limerick man is set for a headline match against Novak Djokovic in the first round of the US Open.

A meeting with the reigning world number one — who has only lost twice this season en route to winning nine singles titles — is Niland’s reward after he battled to a three-set victory over Matwe Mittelkoop in his final qualification match yesterday, 2-6 6-1 6-4.

It is just the second time in the 29-year-old’s career that he will compete in the main draw of a grand slam.

He will be joined there by another Irish representative, Louk Sorensen, who has been handed an equally attractive tie against the tournament’s sixth seed, Robin Soderling.

Sorensen, who returned to the court after briefly retiring from the sport earlier this summer, beat Austria’s Martin Fischer 7-6 6-1 last night to qualify.

In 2010, Sorensen became the first Irish player to win a Grand Slam match in the Open Era when he beat Lu Yen-hsun at the Australian Open.

Despite the ongoing disruption being caused in the New York area by Hurricane Irene, organisers said they are hopeful that the tournament will begin on Monday morning as scheduled.

A further update will be issued tomorrow evening.

  • Ah Louk Sorensen, he’d be one of the Sorensens who used to have the corner shop over in the village, a brother of Micks? Know him well, went to school with his father.

    • Not quite sure what your point is there Dirt.

His brother is Kevin, not Mick ( That must the other Sorensen family you are thinking of)

      His father is Sean.

Now that you can rest assured that his sibling has an acceptably Irish name do you think he will represent us better!?

I think you should dig for your dirt elsewhere.

I’m delighted that Louk and Conor ( grand Irish name all the same ) Niland have qualified for the US open. I really hope they progress, but if you have to go out early it is great that they will play against big names and the matches might be on the TV.

  • Hard to know what to make of the draws. The ranking points on offer for qualifying are pretty paltry (35 – same as a semi-final at a mid-level Challenger, or a title at a top Futures event).

Conor has significant points to defend for the rest of the year and will have his work cut out to even finish in the top 200 so I think he would have preferred a winnable match here.

He’s got a great attitude though and seems the type of guy who will look on the bright side and make the best of the situation. Obviously going to be a great experience playing the world’s best on a show court.
