Dr McKenna Cup: Wins for Fermanagh, Monaghan and Tyrone

Fermanagh and Monaghan lead the way in Section A while it is Tyrone in control in Section C.

Section A

Fermanagh claimed their second successive win with a 2-15 to 1-5 victory over St Mary’s yesterday afternoon in Enniskillen.

And with Monaghan also victorious against Donegal by 3-16 to 1-5 in Ballybofey, the two counties meeting next Wednesday night in Inniskeen will be a critical one.

First-half goals from Shane McCabe and Paul Ward were the springboard for Fermanagh’s success as they helped them to a 2-7 to 1-2 interval lead. Brian Doyle raised the green flag for St Mary’s.

Ward (who hit 1-4 overall) and Daryl Keenan (0-5 in total) shone in the second-half as Peter Canavan’s charges cruised to victory.

In Ballybofey, it was one-way traffic for Monaghan against an understrength Donegal team. Monaghan were in front by 0-7 to 1-1 at the break with Adrian Hanlon grabbing Donegal’s goal.

Yet the Farney county took over in the second-half with Keith McEnaney, Dermot Malone and Darren Hughes all finding the net for Monaghan during that period.

They will entertain Fermanagh in Inniskeen next Wednesday night in a game which will determine who finishes top of this section.

Section C

Tyrone grabbed their second successive win of this competition with a 2-13 to 1-10 victory over Antrim in Casement Park.

Peter Harte fired home two first-half goals for the Red Hands with his first arriving in the 6th minute and the second arriving in the 26th minute.

Antrim struck their own goal in between from the penalty spot courtesy of Kevin Niblock but with Darren McCurry popping over a pair of points, Tyrone lead by 2-6 to 1-4 at half-time.

They held on in the second-half to close out the game and only need a point from their final match against UUJ next Wednesday night to seal qualification for the knockout stages.
