Doyle: I thought Celtic switch was a done deal

“It would have been a great opportunity to play for a massive club,” Doyle said last night.

KEVIN DOYLE EXPECTED to join Celtic when the SPL giants moved to bring him to Parkhead on loan last week.

The striker said he was “pretty sure” the move would happen only for Wolves to reject Neil Lennon’s bid on transfer deadline day.

Now instead of helping Celtic defend their Scottish title and prepare for the Champions League last 16, Doyle must fight to regain his form and impress new Wolves boss Dean Saunders.

“To be honest, the day or two before, I thought it was going to be done,” Doyle said in Dublin last night after he collected the award for 3 International Goal of the Year.

“I was pretty sure it was going to go ahead.”

Saunders revealed last week that Celtic’s late bid was rejected because he would not have enough time to find a replacement.

But Doyle says chairman Steve Morgan assured him that he’s still an important part of the setup.

There was a crossing of wires. I thought the club wanted to get me off the wage bill and the chairman assured me that that wasn’t the case.

“The chairman assured me that he wants me there so that’s all I can do,” he added. “If they didn’t want me, they would have let me go.”

Celtic currently lead the SPL by 15 points as they get set to meet Juventus in the first leg of their Champions League last 16 match next week.

The move, Doyle admits, was very attractive.

“It would have been a fantastic opportunity for four or five months.

“A club in the last 16 of the Champions League and top of their league, it would have been a great opportunity to play for a massive club.”

I think he’s better off at Wolves as Samaras and Hooper would be ahead of him in the pecking order at Paradise.

Great work ethic but rarely scores.

In the last six years, Celtic have beaten Man Utd, AC Milan and Barcelona. Three teams considered giants of the European game. No one will argue that Celtic are as big as these clubs, but they’re certainly not crap, dismissing them as “crap” or “flukes” seems to be the laziest kind of stupidity going.

Okay, I don’t like to be a pedant but since you asked to be corrected, I’ll oblige. You’re about 5000 off the mark there with Celtic Park’s capacity. Also the name “Glasgow” is mistakenly applied to the club, it is not an official part of the club’s name. It’s akin to saying London Arsenal. It does appear in the old song “Hail hail, the Celts are here” so maybe that’s why you are confused.

What’s so wrong with being an Irish Celtic fan either? People are such snobs about the club. The club was founded by an Irishman and has kept its Irish roots when other clubs have shyed away from them (e.g. the Hibbies).

That dig at hibs there Ann-Marie Wallis is uninformed, they acknowledge their Irish past, and founders – but they ‘shy’ away from it, as they don’t want to be involved in sectarianism. They don’t discourage people from supporting them, but they discourage people supporting them for the wrong reason.

Plenty of the Irish celtic fans are proper fans, for footballing reasons – but some are in it for the wrong reason’s. See comments in this thread referring to ‘huns’

Celtic may not be everybody’s cup of tea but are a massive club with an excellent history. First club in Britain to win the European cup and all done with players born within 30km of Celtic park. Also made the final again a couple of years later. I imagine a lot of people on here abusing them are fans of the likes of Chelsea or man city who bought themselves a few titles recently. They are not big clubs. They are clubs with money who will disappear back to were they were before they got the money. Supporting the club goes a lot further than the football side of things. It’s the supporters, the history and what the club stands for and the global reach a club has which makes a club. Celtic are one of the biggest clubs in world football and one of the biggest in Britain. Top 5 I’d say

The voice of reason, excellent post. Its a club with a huge international following and brand recognition. Sure the Scottish league is relatively poor but they’re not doing too badly with top-16 CL football coming up.

Personally, I’m disappointed that the Kevin Doyle thing didn’t happen. I know he’s on the bench for Wolves alot but he would have made a good addition to Paradise, even if he’d be up against Sammy and Super Hooper for a spot.

All this talk of Celtic been the standard of a championship team is fair enough, the SPL is on the slide big team since the collapse of the UTV deal, but saying they’d be cannon fodder in the premier league is nonsense, if Celtic were accepted into the premier league they’d have access to Sky money, I don’t see why a club like Celtic, who play infront of 60k people every week, are debt free, have a fantastic scouting and youth system couldn’t be competitive, saying that pigs will fly before their ever accepted south of the border

Celtic play in a terrible league. They punched above their weight in the CL. I look for their result at the weekend but I reckon league of Ireland will surpass the spl in a couple of years if they get the right people lookin to move it forward. Man Utd fan here by the way.,I’m no glory hunter. Celtic would struggle in the championship in England, atm but if ever moved to the epl they’d get money nd spend so they might not be too bad in the prem!
