Stan's not the man: Dundalk rubbish link with Staunton

Lilywhites deny reports that Steve Staunton was to be interviewed yesterday for vacant manager’s job.

STEVE STAUNTON’S RUMOURED homecoming as manager of Dundalk FC was never on the cards, the club said today.

A report in last weekend’s Sunday Independent said that the former Republic of Ireland boss was due to meet Oriel Park chiefs yesterday as they continue their search for Ian Foster’s successor.

But a spokesperson for the Lilywhites confirmed to TheScore.ie that the link with Staunton was nothing more than speculation.

“The story regarding Steve Staunton being in for the job is false,” the spokesperson said.

Eddie Gormley, former St Patrick’s Athletic boss Pete Mahon and Foster’s assistant Darius Kierans are all thought to be under consideration by the club’s selection committee who hope to make an announcement this side of the Christmas break.

Staunton, whose only managerial experience at club level was a disappointing six-month spell in charge of Darlington, is currently working as a scout for Sunderland.
