Don't call it a comeback: Canning says he won't be ready for relegation decider

Joe Canning admits that he’s unlikely to play any part in Sunday’s Division 1A relegation play-off against Dublin.

GALWAY FORWARD JOE CANNING HAS ruled himself out of Sunday’s Division 1A relegation decider against Dublin.

The Portumna clubman missed Galway’s entire league campaign with a shoulder injury which he picked up playing for Limerick IT in the Fitzgibbon Cup in February.

After seven weeks on the sidelines, the prospect of a comeback in time for Sunday’s  showdown in Tullamore was thought to be a possibility but speaking to TheScore.ie this afternoon, Canning conceded that the game has come just a little too soon.

“I don’t think I’ll be playing this weekend, it’s a bit too soon. It’s frustrating, I’m not really looking forward to sitting on the sidelines again.

“We’re back hitting balls and stuff like that,” the full-forward added, but said that he’s yet to return to full-contact work.

“It’s just going to take another little while. I think I’ll have no part to play on Sunday.”

Canning also missed out on the league last season with a foot injury, adding to the frustration as he readies himself for a return.

It feels almost like déjà vu. I thought I was getting injury-free for a while, but it’s just a set-back. It’s frustrating, but lots of lads get injuries and they come back from it.

It’s hard to get the confidence in the way you play and to get the fitness back and the sharpness back. More so than anything, I think that’s the biggest thing, the sharpness. But every other player does it so why can’t I do it?
