Donegal better Rebels to clinch spot in All-Ireland football final

The Ulster champions maintained their impressive form in 2012 by securing a spot in September’s showdown today in Croke Park.

Donegal 0-16 Cork 1-11
DONEGAL will contest the All-Ireland senior football final for the first time in 20 years after their magical season continued with victory in this afternoon’s semi-final clash over Cork in Croke Park.

The Ulster champions were outstanding in the second-half as they powered in front after being ahead by a point at the interval. A late Colm O’Neill goal in injury-time gave Cork some hope but it only succeeded in trimming Donegal’s winning margin to two points as they had done enough to book their spot in the final on September 23rd.

The opening exchanges of the game were tight and fiercely contested with Cork, who brought in Ciaran Sheehan and Daniel Goulding to their team beforehand, seeing more of the possession yet unable to forge ahead. In the 13th minute the teams were tied at 0-3 apiece yet there was a positive development for Cork in the attacking skills of Colm O’Neill as he kicked some quality points thereafter.

Donegal matched them in that department though with midfielder Rory Kavanagh and centre-back Karl Lacey inspirational to ensure they were level at 0-6 apiece by the 27th minute. Cork, who had Eoin Cadogan in magnificent form throughout, edged in front through Ciaran Sheehan when he pointed but scores from David Walsh and Mark McHugh helped Donegal to lead 0-8 to 0-7 at the break.

Jim McGuinness’s side emerged from the second-half in a determined fashion and began to monopolise the exchanges. Colm McFadden, Frank McGlynn, Lacey and Anthony Thompson were all on target and Cork could only muster an Aidan Walsh point in reply as they trailed by 0-12 to 0-8 after 44 minutes. Sheehan notched a point to cut the gap to three and Cork did see a Colm O’Neill goal bound effort in the 46th minute cannon off the crossbar.

That proved a pivotal moment as Donegal kicked for home, helped by the huge dominance that Glenswilly’s Neil Gallagher was exerting at midfield while substitute Walsh and Kavanagh also put in huge shifts in that department. Mark McHugh was also to the fore for the north-west county and when McFadden converted a ’45 in the 58th minute, they were ahead by 0-15 to 0-10.

Colm O’Neill and Martin McElhinney swapped points in the finale, and while Donegal did spurn some gilt-edged chances in the closing moments, they were able to survive and not even that late finish to the net by O’Neill could alter the course of the game. Donegal held on before a crowd of 55,169 to spark huge scenes of celebration as they get set to face either Dublin or Mayo in the decider.

Scorers for Donegal: Colm McFadden 0-5 (0-2f, 0-1 ’45), Michael Murphy 0-3 (0-3f), Karl Lacey 0-2, Frank McGlynn, Anthony Thompson, David Walsh, Martin McElhinney, Mark McHugh, Rory Kavanagh 0-1 each.

No complaints here from a disappointed and somewhat puzzled Cork fan. We were beaten by the better, hungrier and more tactical astute team on the day. Hats off to Donegal, they were excellent. Best of luck in the final!

Can I just point out two things. Firstly, as a Cork fan I think it is about time the management of Cork were held to account a bit more. I would even suggest some new blood. Conor et al have had 5 yrs and yes we have won 4 leagues but we have only won one Sam in that period with a team that had three all star forwards on the fecking bench for our last game. We get one good game a season out of a team that should be dominating (in my opinion) the championship given their natural ability, skill, power, pace etc. Just not a good enough return imo! Secondly, can I once again express my disappointment with the Donegal fans booing Cork frees today, this is a trait that only some Northern teams and Dublin bring to Croke Park. As much as there is a dog rivalry between the likes of Cork and Kerry etc, there is respect for the players when playing the game without resorting to that crap. I must point out that alot of the Donegal fans around us were great fun and humble in victory and were not booing but just that element creeping into the spectators actions is something I absolutely despise. There is no time for that in Croker.

Anyway well Done Donegal on a great performance and I wish ye every luck in the final from a devastated Cork fan!

Donegal’s victory was much deserved and the game was hugely entertaining. Donegal play a style of football which may not appeal to the so called purists but it is effective. It has challenged the GAA family to an effective response on the field of play and so far the best that can be done is to complain, moan and begrudge. As a Derry fan I may not enjoy Donegal’s success but I can appreciate what has been achieved thus far.

Hate to break it to you but the Dubs are right back down to earth after the mediocre performances since last year. Plus everyone said the winner of Sam would come from the Cork/Kerry/Donegal side of the draw and nobody has said any differently since. Donegal are favourites regardless of who wins the other semi. Seems that having a chance to win Sam for the first time in 20 isn’t motive enough. You still need to hate the Dubs to motivate yourselves.

Footage please? I was there and there was no booing as far as I can recollect! Maybe it was Galvin taking a free was it? *rollseyes!

I could spend an hour or so trawling through footage and find many more examples of Cork and Kerry fans booing, heckling, whistling, whatever you want to call it but I’m going to do something productive with my day off. You make the point that it was against your biggest rivals and it was an important free, does that make it ok? Where’s the respect you talked about in a previous post? Oh and before you say I’m another idiot hill 16 supporter, I’ve many good friends from cork, including work colleagues and team mates who would agree with me 100%. You don’t like Dubs and your bitter about being beaten by a northern team, simple as.

You won’t do it, cause you can’t find those clips, cause it doesn’t happen. Some of my best friends are Dubs and hate the booing too and would be the first to admit Dublin are the worst culprits, something you can’t accept quite clearly. I am not bitter, if you read my initial post that you responded to, I acknowledged we were beaten in every area of the park and that I had no complaints and wished Donegal the best of luck. In what lunatics world are they the words of a bitter fan? There was no booing in that clip, nor will you ever hear Cork fans booing, just like you’ll never hear Munster Rugby fans booing an opposition penalty. We play the game and don’t embroil ourselves in nasty, un-sportsman like manure like booing the opposition. We lost yesterday, we deserved to lose yesterday, that’s a simple fact, just as simple a fact as Dublin will boo every Mayo free this weekend, lets just wait and see shall we! You’re only rambling now cause the only concrete point you tried to make has fallen on its arse with your video “evidence”.

    Diarmaid,

Listen I hate the booing myself, I’d never do it. But I’m not blind enough to suggest nobody in my county would boo the opposition.

Now you can challenge me to find a YouTube clip, don’t bother, I’m not going to waste my time. But to suggest that no Cork fan has ever booed an opposition free taker is laughable. Get down off your high horse buddy

It’s about the collective mindset Robert. Of course you’ll always have the odd fool, that goes without saying, I am on about the collective attitude of a counties fans! I take your point though…

Call it what you want, it was hardly the Kerry fans making the noise. I know galvin doesn’t take frees, I used him to make a point.

Answer this question directly: In that clip that you claimed beforehand had Cork fans booing, was there even one Cork fan you could hear booing?

Ha ha! Is that it? There’s no booing in that Clarence??? I am puzzled at why you showed that clip. We were playing our arch rivals, about to lose after conceding a supposed free kick that shouldn’t have been one in injury time and there was still no booing. Now let’s compare that to what your crowd in the Hill will be getting up to at the weekend! Pathetic!
