Donald secures US and European double, as McIlroy misses out

It has been confirmed that the Englishman will finish the year as world number one.

BRITAIN’S LUKE DONALD will finish the year as world number one after he became the first man to win the US and European money lists in the same year.

Donald finished third in the Dubai World Championship, which guarantees that he will end the year as world number one, at the expense of his closest rival, Rory McIlroy.

With one round still to play in the event, McIlroy admitted he was unlikely to displace Donald in the No 1 spot before the year’s end.

And Donald’s achievement was confirmed, after he finished behind winner Alvaro Quiros and runner-up Paul Lawrie.

Meanwhile, of the Irish contenders, Shane Lowry secured the best finish, with a score of 11 under-par, while Rory McIlroy and Graeme McDowell both finished on nine-under.
