Waterford play down speculation linking Donal Óg Cusack with hurling job

The county secretary dismissed a report suggesting the former Cork goalkeeper was being lined up to take over from Michael Ryan.

WATERFORD HAVE DENIED reports that former Cork goalkeeper Donal Óg Cusack may be in line to take over from departed hurling boss Michael Ryan.

The Irish Examiner reported today that Óg Cusack, who now works as an RTÉ hurling pundit, was in the running for the job. The newspaper suggested that former Waterford hurler John Mullane, and several other senior players, were keen to bring the Corkman on-board.

However, when contacted by TheScore.ie, the secretary of the Waterford County Board, Tim O’Keeffe dismissed talk of an early frontrunner emerging for the post.

“We are having a meeting this evening and will not be commenting further until after that. It’s a normal executive meeting,” he said.

When asked if any firm decisions would be made on appointing a new manager, O’Keeffe replied, “No, I wouldn’t think so.”

He added that the county may be ready to comment further on their recruitment process and possible candidates following the meeting, which is due to end close to 10pm this evening.

Waterford were defeated 1-22 to 2-16 by Kilkenny in the final round of the All-Ireland SHC Qualifiers in July. Ryan’s departure was confirmed last week.

Ryan’s departure was only confirmed last Sunday, a whole four weeks after the loss to Kilkenny. Real shame he announced he’d be stepping down shortly after the minors had reached their first final in 21 years, deflecting the spotlight from what was a fantastic achievement by those young lads.

I think Donal Og would be a great manager for Waterford. Great hurling brain & he’d make sure discipline was better.

Alan, I would have thought the real shame was that the senior hurlers were sitting in a hotel in Waterford rather than sitting in Croke Park supporting the minors

Waterford county board don’t have a pot to pi ss in . How could they afford Cusack and his back room team? They must have learned from the Davy years and all the cash spent then.

To be ‘brilliant’ on the Sunday Game, all it takes is the most basic analysis of one incident. And that’s because we’ve all been reared on the embarrassing sweeping statements of Cyril Farrell and Pat Spillane in both codes.

Donal Óg is a half-decent pundit, but nothing more. A serious facial expression and a bit of ‘picked-out’ footage goes way too far.
