THOSE OF US watching The Sunday Game last night were treated to Donal Óg Cusack mapping out a plan to boost Ulster hurling.
The former All-Ireland winner says the GAA should create a side made up of players from all the province’s counties, which would then take part in the All-Ireland series.
“I’d be very interested in creating a Team Ulster maybe based out of Belfast or somewhere. All these players can come together and compete under that umbrella for the Liam MacCarthy,” the Corkman told Des Cahill.
“From a GAA point of view I think it would be well worth [the investment]. I’d see nothing at all with putting serious money in to it, I’d see nothing wrong even if they have to pay a manager to go up there and ensure they have the best managers they could have in place. Here you have top players totally committed to the game, extremely passionate about the game… the shame is that we don’t see more of these players.”
When asked if the plan would ultimately extend to other parts of the county, the Cloyne clubman admitted he’d like to see it rolled out in Connacht and elsewhere. Fellows pundit Cyril Farrell, admitted however that the GAA would be slow to adopt any proposed change.
