Do you think there should be bonus points in the 6 Nations? Philippe Saint-Andre doesn’t

What’s French for ‘old school’?

FRANCE COACH France coach Philippe Saint-Andre is totally opposed to the introduction of bonus points for the Six Nations tournament, he said yesterday.

The 45-year-old, who is set to take France into his second Six Nations after filling the vacuum left when Marc Lievremmont stepped down after the 2011 World Cup, said he would feel cheated were his side to win the Grand Slam but another team finished top on account of accruing more bonus points.

It was revealed earlier this month in ‘The Observer’ newspaper that the Six Nations was considering falling into line with other tournaments and introducing bonus points. A consultation report has been drawn up for the six countries to discuss whether to bring in the bonus points system which sees sides earn points for scoring four tries and losing by a margin of seven points or less.

On that basis France’s Grand Slam in 2002 would have not been enough to see them top the table as bitter rivals England would have edged them courtesy of four offensive bonus points. All the major European club tournaments award bonus points, but the Six Nations has consistently refused to do so, declaring the history and success of the tournament meant change was not necessary.

The report says that foremost among the countries wanting a full debate on the matter are England.

However, Saint-Andre, an Anglophile having spent more than eight years coaching there, believes imposing bonus points would destroy the whole ethos of the competition.

“I like the system as it is important for World Cups and club competitions,” the 69-time capped former France wing and captain told AFP.

“However, maybe I’m old school but I wouldn’t feel at ease if a team won the Grand Slam and don’t win the Six Nations because another team gets more points on account of bonus points. I would feel cheated if that were to happen because it goes against the spirit of the competition.

“Me, I came into rugby because as a child I used to watch the (then) Five Nations and it was all about either the Grand Slam or the wooden spoon.”

  • There aren’t enough games for the bonus point system to work. There’s no way thrashing Italy at home is ‘worth more’ than grinding out a one-point win in Paris or Twickenham.
Bring in bonus points and the team with more home games in the drier months will win.

    • I agree Peter, a recalculation was done on some rugby website and in the last 10 years bonus points would have changed a final finishing position only once, 4th to 3rd or similar. Too little games adn the main thing is the Slam and crown for everyone anyway. Nobody cares too much where they finish, they only know they missed the Slam or Crown,

  • I am also against bonus points in the 6 Nations. As was stated it would give teams with three home matches an advantage and if two of those matches were in March that advantage would be even greater. Furthermore, as with all test matches, the 6 Nations is essentially cup rugby and as the bonus point rewards apply best to a league or home and away fixtures it is not applicable to the 6 Nations.

  • I agree there aren’t enough games for bonus points really to be relevant. They work in the Heineken Cup because you are comparing teams across groups. In the 6 Nations the wins should remain the most important thing. Separating 3rd and 4th position isn’t really relevant, which is what bonus points often help to do.

  • P.S. England what the debate on this. I’d be wary about that. When is the last time that an initiative came from the R.F.U. that wasn’t in their self-interest?

  • Can’t have bonus points without home and away games. No more room for any more international games so nothing to see here move along now :-D
