Austin Stacks 2-13
A BARN-STORMING second quarter, in which Kieran Donaghy was a central figure, laid the foundation for an easier than expected Austin Stacks victory over Dingle, a win that puts them into their second successive county final.
With the Geaney cousins, Paul and Mikey, and a number of Kerry’s All-Ireland winning minors in their ranks, more was expected of Dingle in the first of a semi-final double-header but they were simply outplayed by a superior and drive Stacks side.
Donaghy finished the game with two points but his prints were all over Stacks performance, especially in that second quarter when he created four scores and scored a fifth as Stacks broke free.
The first 13 minutes saw the sides share four points but then Stacks moved up a couple of gears and they were 0-6 to 0-3 ahead when Donaghy set up Shane O’Callaghan for a goal. Points followed from Donaghy, David Mannix, Michael Collins, Donaghy again and Shane Carroll to leave Stacks 1-11 to 0-4 ahead at the break.
Two early second half points gave Dingle a little momentum but when Marc O’Connor bundled the ball into his own net, under pressure from Donaghy, the game was effectively up for Dingle, as they trailed 2-12 to 0-5.
Dingle, characteristically, battled on and Stacks keeper Darragh O’Brien needed to be sharp to keep out a William Devane shot. There was late consolation for Dingle when Paul Geaney converted a penalty after Barry O’Sullivan was fouled but Stacks were by then comfortably through to the final.
