A SECOND HALF goal from substitute David McDaid was enough to earn Derry City victory over Limerick at Thomond Park this evening.
The Candystripes, who move up to third in the Airtricity League table after the win, came into the game on the back of a midweek Europa League defeat at the hands of Turkish side Trabzonspor.
Limerick, meanwhile, were hoping to bounce back from a 2-1 loss to rejuvenated Shelbourne last weekend.
The home team were up in arms early on when Barry McNamee seemed to foul Shaun Kelly in the box only for the referee to wave play on.
Then, on the 40-minute mark, Derry were handed the perfect opportunity to take the lead when they were awarded a spot-kick after Simon Madden was brought down. Michael Rafter stepped up – but saw his effort well saved by Barry Ryan.
Limerick had chances to go in front after the break but it was Declan Devine’s men who eventually broke the deadlock 21 minutes from time.
McDaid, on for Rafter, found the top corner with his strike after being found by Michael Duffy.
