WHEN LA LIGA’S big two collide, the world sits up and takes notice.

The biggest derby in football rarely disappoints so to keep you amused before tonight’s Copa del Rey clash, TheScore has compiled some of their most historic past meetings.

Barcelona 1-3 Real Madrid – European Cup semi-final second leg, 1960

Madrid clocked up European Cup titles like they were going out of fashion during the competition’s early years. In fact of the nine they’ve won to date, FIVE came between 1955-1960 as they swept aside any club who were foolish enough to stand in their way. This all-Spanish semi-final finished 6-2 on aggregate.

Johan Cruyff personifies ‘the Barcelona way’ and the legendary Dutchman revolutionised the club both as a player and a coach. Madrid had come calling  during his time at Ajax but he turned them down and a year later ran the show in this game – scoring one and assisting three more.

As manager, Cruyff’s ‘Dream Team’ contained talents such as a baby-faced Pep Guardiola (see clip below), Ronald Koeman, Michael Laudrup, Gheorghe Hagi, Hristo Stoichkov and Romario. The Blaugrana annihilated Madrid on this particular January evening with Romario bagging a hat-trick.

Former World Player of the Year Luis Figo enjoyed a God-like status in Catalunya – that was before he upped and left for the capital to become Florentino Perez’s very first Galactico. On this return to Camp Nou, bottles, plastic cups and a pig’s head came raining down on the Portuguese winger’s head before the referee decided to postpone the game for 13 minutes fearing for the players’ safety.

The 06-07 season witnessed an unassuming 20-year-old by the name of Lionel Messi establish himself alongside Ronaldinho and Xavi. Returning from a broken metatarsal, the Argentine maestro equalised three times to rescue a point with a smashing hat-trick. Here’s his third in injury-time:

Real Madrid 1-0 Barcelona – Copa Del Rey final, 2011

Last season witnessed a ‘world series’ of El Clasicos – a La Liga fixture, the two-legged meeting in the Champions League semi-final and the Copa Del Rey final meant the pair faced off on four occasions in the space of 18 days. Barca claimed a league and European double but Madrid did deny them the domestic cup thanks to this Cristiano Ronaldo header.

  • In the world of modern football and the Premier League bigging up all their Super Sunday clashes of the top English clubs which on most occasion disappoint, El Clasico is more than just in a league of it’s own.. it’s taken football to another level.

Mourinho’s Real Madrid may be adrift in La Liga but when these two sides meet, and the two best players in the world meet, it truly is a spectacle to behold. Looking forward to this match even more with the news that the two reserve keepers will start tonight which coupled with the fact that Ronaldo has scored in the last 6 Clasicos and Messi has scored in his last 16 games should lead to a feast of goals.

Going to be pro-Madrid and say 3-2 for the home side tonight.

  • hagi didnt play for barcelona ,he played for steaua and galatasary amognst others , so that was a mistake by the score the cup final in valencia in 2011 was terrible , barca played unbelievable football example watched messi,s amazing run past 4 players for pedros amazing goal , the referee never gave it and there was nothing in it , the madrid defenders like arbeloa and ramos who are nothing special as players fouled all evening to stop barca playing football , and they scored a good goal on the counter in extra time in fairness great cross by di maria , whAT still makes me sick is that barcelona had the perfect 4 years with guardiola with spain winning 2 euros and a world cup which they owe loads to barca,s success they had 7 players on the startin 11 in 2010 , but barca lost some big ones marginally like the inter one , a penalty not given a milito goal offside , the madrid cup final which stopped them winning the treble they was robbed of that and also the chelsea semi they dominated both legs last april but still lost , the ones that got away are still hard to take . but watch barcelonas class , the cup gets robbed on them and then dropped off a bus by donkeyface ramos and barca come back to win the big ones a week later the semi 2 legged champions league match . madrid make me sick the way they play barcelona especially that year , they dont play football they just try to bully the smaller in size opposition , there is nothing to respect real madrid for
