Declan Kidney: Our objective is to win the series

The Irish coach feels it would be ‘disrespect to the jersey’ not to try for a sweep of Tests against New Zealand.

IRELAND COACH DECLAN KIDNEY targeted a series win against world champions New Zealand after he named his squad for the June tour at the Aviva Stadium on Monday morning.

Three new caps were included in the tour squad and four further places are set to be filled after the Barbarians match at Gloucester next week.

Kidney believes that Ireland, ranked eight in the world, have nothing to lose when they take on an All Blacks side that won the World Cup last October.

He said, “We ask (New Zealand) to play with full-strength sides when they come here so we have to do the same.

“You don’t experiment against a side like New Zealand; you have to go for it.” Kidney added:

The objective is to win the series, first and foremost, and to work downwards from there. We know the record, we have never beaten New Zealand and to beat them would be a great achievement but it would be disrespect to the jersey not to go for (the series win).

The Heineken Cup boost

Kidney feels “proud” of the efforts of both Leinster and Ulster in the Heineken Cup Final on Saturday but he pointed out that the performance levels still needed to raise 15% for a tough international tour.

Speaking of Leinster’s win, he said, “What an occasion. It was the biggest crowd ever for a final and the boys went for each other full-throttle.” Kidney added:

It was one of the best finals ever in terms of the quality of the rugby played and you would have to be proud (as an Irish coach).

“I’ve been involved in that (provincial) level before and I know what it takes to win so it is a fantastic achievement.”

The Other Guys

Kidney named the ‘frontrunners’ to fill the spots currently reserved for A.N Other and its clones.

Brett Wilkinson of Connacht is favourite to take his place in the front row but must prove to management that he has fully recovered from a calf injury that curtailed his season.

Leo Cullen should step in in Paul O’Connell does not recover from his knee injury.

Isaac Boss is in pole position to tour his home country as scrum-half but Paul Marshall, who will feature against the Barbarians next week, is still in with a chance. Kidney added:

Chris Henry is the frontrunner for the back row. He is carrying niggles after an arduous season but he put in another strong shift (in the Heineken Cup Final) on Saturday.

Kidney reiterated that all involved in the Barbarians game would be considered as back-ups and mentioned the names Ronan Loughney, Paddy McAllister, David Kilcoyne and Jack McGrath as further options in the front row mix.

  • Hopefully we can capitalise from the sterling performance in the Heineken cup. However I am doubtful of the ability of our pack to stand up against New Zealand.

No NH club side is ever going to be the All Blacks – they were saying the same about Munster in 2009. Stop

    • Except that this Leinster team are better than any Munster team of the professional era. The manner in which Leinster play is actually very similar to the ABs. They live off the errors of the other team and also pick the time to up tempo and score a couple of tries. That technique is in evidence for NZ as in every game they have a strong 10-15 min period and the rest of the time they just roll with the punches. Leinster closely follow this style of play and thus the comparisons that are being made. Munster never had what this Leinster squad have right now so don’t be disrespecting the best club team in the world it comes across a little silly!

  • I’m not sure if they are the best club team in the world. I think a few of the Super 15 teams would chuckle at that.
They were inches away from being beaten by Clermont in the semi. Small margins at the top indeed. They do play a beautiful brand of rugby though and it’s good to see a team playing that way winning out.

Munster have beaten the All Blacks – a feat no other Irish side has ever done . When the goys of Leinster do that, come back and talk to me !

that is exactly it. the style of it all.

munster are and always have been dull, winning or losing. kidney is dull. i think in a few years time people will look back on kidney and his approach and wonder how on earth they accepted that. we can only imagine what irleand and munster could really have been like (and before we hear all the ‘we won’ stuff, wouldn’t it have been even better to have advanced the casue of rugby itself at the same time instead of stifling everything until the team most able to stranglehold became the ‘best’ team

  • I disagree with the comments about Peter O Mahoney, I think he deserves and has earned a spot in the squad. I am a Leinster supporter and I wouldn’t be adverse to seeing a back row of O’Brien, Ferris & O Mahoney. Mr Heaslip has lost the ability to run with a ball. On the Madigan front he certainly deserves a run in the November series.

Agree completely – OBrien an outstanding No 6 never a No7. OMahony has pace and deserves his chance. Personally I think they will get steamrolled in all 3 tests. I’d blood more than 3 new caps – what have we got to lose. IRFU just thinking of our overall world rankings – they are strangling any chance of new lads coming through. Kidney is doing what he is told to do. Much like soccer crowd who won’t allow Celtic and 2 other big clubs play inThomonf Park !

    • Elrat, Im guessing you jumped on the Munster bandwagon a few years back, cos you’ve no idea about rugby. SOB’s become an excellent 7, you don’t beat Clermont in France without a competent 7. He’s still very young & learning his new trade at open-side, he’ll rival Pocock & Warburton soon enough. Oh, and it was a Leinsterman Tony Ward that beat the All Blacks for yous…

Why not take the entire Leinster team out there . According to Irish independent – the are the All Blacks of Europe !!

  • All Blacks will devour Zebo for fun! If he can’t make a clean tackle in a pro12 match against one of the Italians or a H Cup Quarter Final he has no hope down there! Gutted for Kev McLoughlin as he’s had a smashing season!

Kidney believes Ireland have nothing to lose but says “You don’t experiment against a side like New Zealand.”
Ha, that’s not a good sign.

18 players for 5 games in a sub-standard 6N – busted flush choke and hold tactic from 2009 still in use – wake up Kidney.

  • No Kevin McLaughlin is a shocking decision I assume that one dimensional moron O’Mahony is there in his stead. Also the picking of Zebo and O’Gara ahead of D Kearney and Ian Madigan is total joke. Most commentators agree that Leinster would have beaten most 6 nations teams this year which is a team not featuring the very ordinary Zebo and O’Mahony and let’s be honest Madigan on form at the moment is a much better player than the returning from injury Ogara!! As long as kidney is in charge of our international set up we will continue to go backwards. JOKE

    • I think it’s time we got to see Zebo at international level, although NZ would be a tough baptism. I wouldn’t describe him as ordinary either, but what we haven’t seen is how good he is defensively.

I’d agree with Madigan ahead of O’Gara. We need to start the process of getting an understudy and eventual successor to Sexton into the team. In the long run, that might turn out to be any one of Madigan, Paddy Jackson or Scott Deasy, but for the time being Madigan is in pole position, with more experience than the other two. Also, after his Heineken Cup final nightmare, Jackson could probably do with some time out of the limelight (N.B. One bad match shouldn’t ruin a players career as anyone who remembers Matthew Tait’s debut for England against Wales should remember).

Delighted to see Cave in there.I know he’s had his injury problems, but he’s long overdue another cap.

    • Your comment about O’Mahoney is just plain stupid, he’s a fine player, agree with your regarding O’Gara, no need for O’Callaghan either, why not bring Zebo? Have to give youth a chance, pity he didn’t include Madigan and Marshall

    • O’Mahony is a one trick pony he carries hard and he puts his body on the line but against New Zealand that is not enough. I believe that McLaughlin is a more intelligent and more useful player as back row cover and he also is useful in the line out where I have yet to see a major contribution from O’Mahony. Regarding Zebo I think that he is one of the most over rated players in our provincial teams. I am all for giving youth it’s chance and I’m delighted to see Touhy in there but there are much better outside backs playing in this country than Zebo. D Kearney is a much stronger player as is Craig Gilroy. Zebo will not be a consistent international in this country at any point in his career yet D Kearney is a much more solid and consistently intelligent player. I fear that kidney is too closely tied to Munster and thus this team are destined for failure under his tutelage. Its a pity but it’s true

    • I’m sorry I have to disagree with ya regarding O’Mahoney, talking about giving youth a chance yet you want to leave the Irish young player of the year at home, he’s not just a one trick pony, he turns over some amount of ball, give McLaughlin a chance in the second row, Kidneys conservative selection policy is as frustrating for a Munster fan as it for any other Irish fan, I’d love if he was as brave as Gatland, but that’s never going to happen

shouldn’t that read ‘objective is to lose the series’?

should be easily achievable with that team selection
