Here’s the 6 things Declan Kidney wants from Ireland in November

The Ireland head coach had his game-face on.

AT TODAY’S SQUAD announcement, Ireland coach Declan Kidney was in pretty decisive mood.

Asked what he wanted from his team in the three games this November, Kidney responded with six quick bullet points as a response.

Once he had got the pre-requisite (slide two) out of the way these are the areas he says Ireland need to improve upon.

  • 1. Results.

"There's ranking points that are hugely important," Kidney says. "There's people paying their hard-earned money to come and support us. It's vitally important we give them something to row in behind." ©INPHO/Billy Stickland
  • 2. 'Give every last ounce'.

"You want to do what every Irish team do when they go out on the pitch, give 100%." ©INPHO/Billy Stickland
  • 3. Ball retention.

"We can't be turning it over as often as we did. If we turned it over against anybody like we did in our last match, we'd have been beaten by any of the top 12 teams in the world." ©INPHO/Billy Stickland
  • 4. Restarts.

"The Kick-off was another area we had a good learning from on the tour." Kidney said. "Even the other night in the Connacht v Harlequins game; Harlequins made good return from the kick-off and that gave them good foothold in the Connacht half a few times." ©INPHO/Billy Stickland
  • 5. 'Earlier and better decisions'.

"You want earlier and better decisions around the breakdown. We don't want guys entering the breakdown halfway through a phase of play, then the ball comes flying out the other end and he still has his head stuck in no-man's land." ©INPHO/Billy Stickland
  • 6. "The tackle. You're always looking for new ways to improve that aswell."

  • I’ve an idea, develop a plan B….

    • This is exactly it.

We never have a plan B, and the bench is packed with similar players to cover as much as possible, rather than having game changers.

When things don’t work, and legs get tired, the bench is brought in – players who were second choice for executing plan A.

    • And a c and a d! If he spent some time mixing it up instead of falling back on the same ol shite, the next 6 nations could be a brilliant testing ground and eventually we could arrive at the World Cup as proper contenders.

  • conservatism, that just about sums Kidney up in my opinion.and too much of it.too much structured ‘plays’ and not enough free flowing, play whats in front of you, type rugby.obviously there has to be a balance between the two,bit something akin to the Welsh,French or southern hemisphere teams.watching sevens rugby lately and it was such a breath of fresh air to watch.Fear of change and and knowing you are only as good as your last game,is whats hindering Kidneys gameplan.

If you have Smidth & Penney basically coaching same brand of rugby and then kidney coaching his brand – it cannot work

  • As a long-time Munster fan I have grown sick and tired of Kidney and his cliched guff. The team is going backwards which is especially galling given the plentiful talent that is available in all 4 provinces at present. The game has moved on but Deccie is stuck in the last decade.

  • A proportion of the manager’s bonus should be deferred to a couple of years after their term. It should only be paid if players introduced during that term are playing well and regularly.
These Autumn games are a perfect opportunity to test new players and combinations, why not use them to do it!

  • Funny he mentions ranking points, which mean absolutely nothing, since we’d have to lose to both Argentina and SA, and Scotland would have to beat SA and Aus to have a remote chance of being overtaken.

    Such a cop out merchant.

    Tick tock…

  • The one thing I’d like to see from kidney is his goodbye press conference.

I dont like the sound of that. People would rather we tried to expand our game than keep falling back to this eek out a win crap which doesnt even work. Thats not what people pay for, they pay to see some good rugby. He’s also worried about how easily we turned over ball. From previous experience I’d say he’ll solve that by instructing the team to kick it away every chance they get. Slow games, lots of kicking and hoping and praying we come away with a win, same old crap.
