‘I’ve been asked to coach Ireland, I will continue to coach them’ – Kidney

The embattled coach bristled at the suggestion he may step down after today’s 60 – 0 defeat.

FOLLOWING A RECORD 60 – 0 drubbing at the hands of World Champions New Zealand, Declan Kidney refused to be drawn to the topic of his future as Ireland coach.

In this morning’s post-match press conference, TheScore.ie‘s reporter asked whether he and the players could still go on, regroup and challenge for honours.

“I’ve absolutely no doubt that the players can go on and do that (challenge for honours), because just have to get more consistent in what we do.”

Kidney omitted himself from the equation and was asked to clarify and responded in a sharper tone:

“It’s an honour to coach your country. I’ve been asked to coach them and I will continue to coach them.”

The basis of the results, Kidney says, are the opening exchanges; an area Ireland were able to find joy in last week’s second test.

“Last week,” he said, “we showed how you play New Zealand. Let’s not give them 20 points in the first 20 minutes.

“If you look at the three games – the first game and the third game – we’ve gone behind by a considerable amount by making turnovers and once New Zealand get into their rhythm, they’re not World Champions for nothing and they took their scores then – you’re not going to beat them playing their type of game.”

Bandwagon

The former Munster boss also refuted the suggestion that playing three end-of-season games in New Zealand was, in hindsight, a mistake.

“Right now it hurts. We said we’d find out a lot about ourselves after three weeks. I believe we’ll do that after this.

“It’s easy to hop on a bandwagon right now, we found out a lot of things about ourselves that we don’t like. But now we’ve found them, the time to (correct them) is the off-season. We’ll take a good look at them and we’ll adjust those for the off season, no doubt.

“We will gain in the long run, as much as it is hurtful now.”

Only in Ireland. New contract before tour. Lose all games. Last result 60-0. Remain job

    • Didn’t they give a new contract to Eddie o Sullivan before the disaster that was the 2007 world cup too? And the fai gave a new contract to trap just before the euros…. Great stuff…

  • Time to move on Deccy! Ruddock and O’Shea would be great there

  • I fail to see how we can ever beat the All Blacks when we are forced to play them at the end of the season with a lot of players missing and of those that are available, not at the best.

  • kidney owes us nothing he’s been a great manager for us and munster, his record speaks for itself but i think its time to graciously back down with his head held high to give someone else a deserved chance to reinvent the team

It is unfortunate for a man with a CV as decorated as Kidney does that he is now on the verge of becoming a figure of ridicule (not disimilar to Graham Taylor at the end of his England tenure), as opposed to the man who delivered Ireland’s first Grand Slam in 60 years.

    • The great pretender Kidney should step down now. He is delusional.
He ran the last mile of Eddie O’Sullivans marathon and really believed it was his “genius” that did it. Now that he has to think for himself he thinks flying Paddy Wallace half way around the world and putting him in the starting line up was a good thing…. It shows the stupidity of the man.

  • Sesal can’t help him/herself ( the clues in the surname)! The rugby team have had too much playing time & this tour was only put together to generate revenue for the IRFU – that’s the disgrace & not the players. Also the kiwis are fresh, fully fit & world champs – top drawer professional athletes just warming up ! The series result was never a doubt.

  • Having been exposed to NZ and it’s other religion now for a few years – the lads should concentrate on the positives = test 1; the AB’s couldn’t penetrate the defense near the ruck within the red zone; in test 2 we show’d up to contest and the AB’s didn’t :-{ sadly it was a lucky win to the AB’s. test 3 shows what happens when you poke the Troll with a big stick while he’s sitting under the Bridge: The AB’s knew they were lucky and had a week to stew on nearly being the first team to lose to Ireland. Fear a bigger motivator than the potential of victory. There is a lot to take away and celebrate, balanced by a lot to work on. The Green Machine will always be welcome in the Land of the Long White Cloud…………..the Kiwis need some help celebrating….just like religion they take it too seriously .

  • I have a brilliant idea – Trap could manage our Rugby team and Kidney could look after the Soccer

  • His squad selection for this tour typified a man who is past it. The four centres that we played on the back of a WC year were darcy, BoD, Wallace and earls who played at 12. O Gara as second choice 10, what was the point in these selections?? We learned very little from this tour. Things do not look good on the international front at 6nations and WC comps.

  • These players can now enjoy a well earned break and Declan needs to start preparing for another tough season ahead and hopefully plans to blood some more young players in preparation for the next W.C. I think Kidney definitely deserves another season or two, he’ll get things right, he has a great mind for the game, Ireland have played some fantastic aggressive rugby under his management, granted we’ve played some shite too but a bit more tweaking and consistency and we’ll get there.

  • Gavin McGuinness is dead right. End of season exhaustion, traveling 12,000 miles with five of our front-line players missing, playing a fresh and rested World championship All Black team on their own turf. On top of which we would have beaten them but for a disastrously wrong referee’s decision in the closing moments and a second infringement behind our own lines, not spotted by the officials but referred to by Donal Linehan in his post match comments. Despite all the prior conditions referred to above, I have never seen an Irish team play better. We should be very proud of them, regardless of the last match, hardly surprising after the super-human efforts the previous week. The second match is the measure of how good they are and can be. They shattered the mighty all Blacks in that game.

  • He’s dead right to stay on….given his record with Munster, Irish rugby would be all the worse for his loss…

  • Until rugby stops being an elitist sport in Ireland we will never have the depth to seriously contend with the likes of the AB’s on a consistent basis- hard luck Ireland and BOD your a legend
