David Moyes to be sacked, according to British press

The Glazers are unwilling to trust the Scot with their summer window budget.

DAVID MOYES WILL be sacked by Manchester United ‘imminently’ according to reports in the British press today.

The Glazer family have lost patience with the beleaguered Scot after a disastrous first term in charge.

“It is understood that the plan now is to sack Moyes at the end of the season but the situation could now come to a head later on Monday or in the coming days. If the former Everton boss is sacked before the season’s end, club legend Ryan Giggs will be asked to take over team affairs,” writes Ian Ladyman of the Daily Mail.

United will not play Champions League next season and are already guaranteed their lowest ever Premier League points total. They were crowned champions last year with 11 points to spare.

“The 50-year-old’s reign could end before Saturday’s Old Trafford encounter with Norwich City if he chooses to seek assurances over his future which executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward is unlikely to be able to offer,” writes The Telegraph‘s Mark Ogden.

Do you think it’s the right decision?

What is the point sacking Moyes and getting Giggs to take over with only a few games left? At least leave the man a bit of dignity and let him see out the season. If they want to make a change then, fair enough.

Well to be honest Wolf Pack – what has his dignity got to do with it? He has left precious little dignity for the club this season.

Sacking him now might give the squad a lift – they clearly don’t want to play for him. They may just improve over the next couple of games. Not that it matters now.

Plus there is the share price to consider. They cannot really afford to lose more games (and they will) and may need to show a willingness tot take action from a business point of view.

Well Felix, I actually think dignity has a lot to do with it. Things have not worked out for Moyes this season, no doubt. But I do believe he is a good footballing man that, at this late stage deserved to get the full year.

And what lift will it give the squad? Get them to 6th instead of 7th? In my opinion parts of that squad have been nothin short of a disgrace this year. I think they knew Moyes was always going to be the fall guy and used it as a crutch.

And is having an interm manager with no previous experience really going to save the share price as you say?

United had the same manager for over two decades. Now they will have three in one year and I disagree with that.

According to YOU dignity might have a lot to do with it. Not to the United board though who have a billion dollar empire to run.

Good footballing men get shafted all the time – at United, most recently, Moyes shafted Ferguson’s coaching staff. How did that work out for him?

The lift it MAY give the squad is to get them playing in the right way. The problem Moyes had had and United have is NOT where they finish in the table. It is the fact that PERFORMANCES have been DREADFUL. Neville said it many many times this season – You can lose matches, but NEVER be dull.

Everton yesterday was ABJECT. Two shots on target in 90 minutes with 61% possession.

They may get from 6th to seventh. They may not. But the lift it might give the squad is that they play better football and right now THAT is what matters.

First of all Felix putting various words in capital letters doesn’t actually increase the weight of your argument!

Secondly if the Glazers are so worried about their billion dollar business should they not sack the entire board and indeed Ferguson in particular who was soley responsible for making such a terrible decision? Or should he be cut some slack?

There will be a media circus when Moyes is sacked before the season ends, all negative publicity highlighting how far United have fallen…and all for what? To appoint an interm who himself will be replaced anyway.

As I cannot use italics I must use capitals. I think you’ll find that, according to conventional writing rules, altering the stylisation of specific words DOES denote emphasis – specifically the use of italics.

Sacking Moyes for 9 months of dreadful performances and a failure to improve the team is reasonable. Sacking the Board or Ferguson for one poor decision is not. Grow up.

There is no hiding how far United have fallen. The entire world is well aware of it. Sacking Moyes won’t make the world any more aware of it – whatever the headlines. And lets face it – those headlines are all going to be “United Board make inevitable, unavoidable decision”.

Of course they have to appoint an interim. The only other option is to appoint no one. Maybe Evra could pick himself up front?

At this point there is no real downside to sacking him. Certainly not compared to sacking him in 4 weeks.

    @ All of you

As usual the truth lies somewhere in between. This is an ageing, poorly developed squad with a real lack of top tier quality. Ferguson abdicated building responsibilities during his last few years.

Moyes on the other hand has been a disgrace from the moment he arrived. There has not been one single laudable action he has taken – from pandering to Rooney, to failing to inspire his players, to meek acceptance of failure and his embarrassing press statements, never mind the shoddy transfer business – he has been a joke.

Moyes only has himself to blame for failing to make the best of a poor United squad.

But there were serious problems with the squad when he arrived.

United have an aging defence. About to lose 2 of their more experienced players. A midfield lacking imagination. A midfield with a 40 year old in it and one that Scholes dominated last year.

They fell quicker than would have been expected though. New manager will be following Moyes not Ferguson so much less pressure.

Anyone with two eyeballs can see that the squad is in a dilapidated state and you could barely choose some of them that would make it into any of the top 4s starting eleven. The current state of United is down to one man and the board that supported him. Not moyes

The Owners for failing to invest top dollar for top players
The Board for not planning for Fergusons retirement
Ferguson for ignoring crisis level issues in the squad, transfer, scouting and youth development systems.
Moyes for his truly abject and lamentable management this season.

Here’s some of my favourite comments!

John Deane: ‘Dont worry Liverpool fans i wouldnt get my hopes up finishing above United this season because its not going to happen.’

Conor Counihan: ‘I’m loving all the LFC fans on here writing Moyes off. He’s made Everton the best team on Merseyside now. The league table never lies :)’

Martin Jones nails it: ‘They be lucky to get a top four finish. Moyes has never won a trophy and don’t wont change next season, very average squad’

As was Jamie McCormack: ‘I’d say Liverpool will finish higher than Utd next year’
to which B7584 responded: ‘Come down off whatever drugs youre on.’ – the Rodgers drug baby!

And finally Sean Kelleher, hats off Sean!: ‘Cant wait to see United in mid table at the end of the season with no champions league spot, no prem title and Moyes been shown the road’

    87-88 – 2nd place
    88-89 – 11th place
    89-90 – 13th place. (won FA cup.)
    90-91 – 6th (Cup winners cup)
    91-92 – 2nd (League Cup)
92-93 – finally won. Only took the (apparently) greatest manager 7 seasons to get there. Fire Moyes now & I guarantee the fans will be looking for the next poor sod to be sacked this time next year too.

    Quality?
Not a single player from their current squad would start at Liverpool or City, van Persie and maybe Rooney would get a spot at Chelsea! The rest is utter rubbish! Without the 40 year old Giggs and the mid-thirties Evra and Ferdinand they would have ended up even further down the table!
Utd wasn’t that short of quality since the early 80′s and it will take a hell of a lot more than a new managers and a couple of big name signings in the summer to make them winning trophy a again!
That’s the truth and as a Liverpool supporter I am thoroughly enjoying every second of it!

Young, Smalling, Ferdinand, Nani, Fellaini are examples of those that have to be shown the door because they are not good enough.

Keep Rooney, because he’s the club’s leader, Evra, Carrick, Fletcher, Kagawa, Valencia, Buttner (who has actually impressed since he was ACTUALLY given game time), Van Persie, Jones (I think he’s had better seasons but this isn’t one of them), Mata and Hernandez.

Rooney should never have been kept. The very VERY last thing he is is a leader. He is absolutely NOT a leader. When the chips were down under Ferguson he threw his toys out of the pram twice and asked for transfers.

He is nowhere near the best player in the UK and not worth 300k per week. Thats a joke. Thats Ronaldo, Messi money and he isnt even close to them. His performance against Everton was once again lamentable.

    Moyes should have sold him.

Evra, Carrick, Cleverley, Fletcher, Vale have to go along with Young, Nani, Rio, Giggs and Vidic.

I was certain CERTAIN he would leave this summer. Why on earth would you sign a new contract with United doing so badly?

Then Moyes bottled it by offering him 300k, a say in transfers, a future “ambassador’s role” and the Captaincy. I mean for **** sake. What a cowardly little worm Moyes became.

People think because he runs around a lot he’s a captain. Hell give me 300k a week and a professional fitness coach training me every day – I’ll Captain them.

Everton yesterday is a perfect example. Team losing. Chips down. CL qualification hanging in the balance. A leader, a figurehead a truly inspirational character – someone ACTUALLY WORTH 300k a week would have come up with something. As Keane did. As Cantona did. As Giggs did. As Robson did.

Rooney? He just ran around a lot.

    @ Banking

As I stated above Banking Moyes has been a disaster. Everything (visible) that he has done has been a joke.

But there is no denying that the club was adrift. That squad badly needed a complete overhaul. No midfielders, poor wingers, and an ageing defence.

Moyes inherited a poor squad by United standards. But he made an absolute mess of what he had. Martinez and Rodgers have shown what can be achieved with positivity, attacking football and good tactics and training.

The current United squad is not, arguably, top 4 when you consider the investments of Arsenal, Chelsea, City, Spurs and Pool and the play of Everton and Pool. Are they as bad as 7th? Possibly.

It is not the end result that matters – it is the dreadful dreadful performances and total lack of improvement. And the inescapable conclusion that Moyes has no idea how to change it all.

But it cannot be convincingly argued that Everton’s squad is significantly better than Uniteds. Moyes got a poor United squad – but he managed it dreadfully and the way they have been playing is disgusting. That’s down to him.

Martinez and Rodgers have shown what can be achieved playing fast positive attacking ball even with a limited squad and Moyes should take note.

Next year will be a big year for Martinez after starting so well and when he puts more of his own stamp on the club. United look clueless since Moyes took over and haven’t gotten any better since. The hangover from red nose can’t explain it all. There are no bloody midfielders at the club. There haven’t been for 6 years. Their CL winning defence is now all over 32. Smalling & Jones are decent but they haven;t developed the way they’d hoped. And their isn’t a single leader in the whole damn side.

For every Ronaldo or Keane there was a half a dozen Djemba Djembas. Had he ( Fergie ) not had those youth players coming through he wouldn’t have had the time at United he did.

Also no realistic chance of winning the champions league .. A move to united would give him a fresh challenge to rebuild a team that wont have there best players taken from them every year .. And a realistic chance of winning the premier league in a year or two .

As a Man U fan 34 years it always makes me laugh when I see other supporters especially liverpool fans put the boot in. Any manager following ferguson was in for a tough job, Moyes plus players performances added to the results. The players have to be accountable. A good clear out and give Moyes until xmas. Building a good team takes time and patience, I’d rather not see a revolving door of managers. It won’t take us 25 years to win the league again unlike some…..I’m not a bitter fan I’m glad to see Gerard’s loyalty rewarded and the title win would be a great tribute to the hillsborough tragedy

I don’t think that the United “fans” who sang “justice for the 39″ yesterday are in any way representative of the club or its values. Right decision. He was never the right man for the job.

There is quality in his current squad, his handling of the press has been embarrasing for United, no big game mentality, no tactics.

It made no sense to give a 6 year contract to someone who has never won anything in football. Especially when you consider the other top managers that were available at the time or could have been gotten for a fee.

This season has gone worse than anyone could have realistically imagined. Time to go David.

The 6 year contract made perfect sense if the Board wanted stability, long term planning and a manager who was going to develop sustained success. Rodgers and Martinez haven’t won anything either – that is not to say that they can’t. Previous record is not a perfect yardstick to judge by.

The Board could not have anticipated how poor he would be though.

The 6 year contract made perfect sense given what the Board were looking for.

The only other Manager confirmed as available and actually interested in the job was Mourinho. The Board never wanted him and rightly so.

Martinez actually won an FA Cup. And besides, Rodgers and Martinez are also relatievely young managers. David Moyes has been around for about 15 years and only once reached a cup final!

Why didnt they give Moyes a 2/3 year contract in case it backfired like this?

The stability argument makes no sense although the board meant well and it was a statement of intent.

Previous performance may not be a perfect measure but David Moyes had no noteworthy achievements in football – there was no suggestion that he was up to this job – and low and behold he has completely floundered in the position.

Ah yes forgot about the FA cup win for Wigan.

They didn’t give him a 2/3 year contract because they were convinced he could build something that would last. It was an extraordinary show of faith and a statement that they were in it for the long haul with Moyes. I also guess it was a way of showing stability to the stock market given the turbulence after SAF retirement.

The stability argument makes perfect sense. There was a recognition that the squad wasn’t great – as stated many times by Woodward and others. That takes time to overhaul.

Moyes may not have won anything. So what? The Board weren’t looking for a manager with a winning track record. Otherwise they could have hired Mourinho.

They wanted manager who would start a project and see it through, hard working, determined, a reasonable track record with buying players on a budget, a reasonable track record of bringing through youth players and someone who avoided controversy with the press.

Anyone who says “He has no track record of achievement” is assuming that that was a relevant criteria. They are wrong. It clearly wasn’t. If it was – they would have hired someone else.

United haven’t developed a youth player of quality in years, they have no midfield, no quality wingers, they haven’e been able to find replacements for Giggs & Scholes in a decade, they keep buying players to play in Rooney’s position, they keep pandering to Rooney and they can’t attract world class talent from Europe…

There was a MAJOR job of work to be done at United. SAF left the place in a bit of a state.

That’s not excusing Moyes who has been disgraceful, but it wasn’t as easy a job as everyone imagines.

Cant attract world class talent? RVP? Mata?

They were able to spend £80m this season!

Its a financially secure club, that was going through its most succesful era. World class facilities, huge support and a board that supports the manager and gives them the necessary funds to compete.

Yes there is the issue with the central midfield and inconsistent wingers, but they still walked the league last year. Surely they are better than 7th!

I’d like you to name one English club with better circumstances.

I need to clarify that. Although United have routinely bought the top players available in the the Premier League – Keane, Cole, Yorke, Cantona, Ferdinand, Rooney, RVP they have almost never been able to sign established world class talent from Europe.

Fabregas last summer is a perfect example.

I do not include Mata because a) whether he will be able to find his Chelsea form is a matter of some dispute and b) with a world cup in the summer he was DESPERATE to play ANYWHERE. United were desperate for a marquee signing irrespective of the fact that they already had three players playing in his position.

The league win last year is totally irrelevant. This is not the same league. Chelsea/City/Spurs all spent close to 100m. They brought in new, superior managers. Arsenal spent 46m on one of the best players in Europe. It is NOT the same league so to say “We won it last year” is missing the point.

The defence was decrepid. The midfield is non existent. The wingers are bang average.

Chelsea, City, Arsenal are all in better shape right now. Not just in terms of the strength of their squads but also in their approach to identifying and signing players. The same could be said of Spurs though there management structure seems all over the place. Liverpool certainly seem to have made excellent strides and Coutinho and Sturridge have been wonderful, affordable signings while Suarez was secured without CL football to attract him.

Points taken, youre not wrong in what youre saying but my underlying point is that Moyes was NEVER the right man for this job.

The fact that he had alot of favourable conditions and ended up 7th is testament to that.

He brought his best player from Everton with him – And in one season they nearly equal what he did in ten!

The fact is that he just was never the man for the job. I’m sure you’ll agree with that.

It certainly seems now that he was never up to the job. Perfect hindsight and all that. I think he has only himself to blame for not manning up and taking the fight to the League rather thank meekly wimping out. That’s something that will haunt him I’d wager. I don’t blame the Board for the appointment however. It seemed sensible at the time.

But my point is that 7th isn’t that shocking. Once that transfer window slammed shut in September with no overhaul he was up against it. I said at the start of the season we wouldn’t make the CL. We didn’t have the quality. For me it’s a slip, not from 1st to 7th, but from 5th to 7th. I expected 5th. We are in 7th.

The problem is not where we finish in the league. The problem is how we have approached it and how we have played. This has been sickening to watch. And it hasn’t improved. Not even remotely.

To be fair to Moyes he could not have anticipated Fellaini’s failure. He was at least as good as anything at United on Everton form. But he wilted in the light of OT. As many have before.

    @ Cian

And what has Moyes done to get the best out of RVP? Last year – only a couple of minor injuries. This season?

“Run laps there Robin…there’s a good lad….wait…what do you mean he’s injured again?”

Fast twitch players like RVP have to be managed and trained in a certain way. Moyes didn’t recognise that. Just one of his many MANY mistakes.

Of course he needs to be managed carefully, i’m sure he was, you’d presume theres an abundance of physios and fitness coaches advising how RVP should be handled, doubt its moyes ordering laps to be fair, he spent plenty times on the sidelines at arsenal too, lethal when fit just injury prone unfortunately! Not fair on moyes to take all the slack, plenty of players to blame who went hiding this year. Give the man time, he’s earned a chance to put his own stamp on this team (fellaini aside obviously, at least he’s dropped him recently for kagawa!)

    @ Cian

RVP said it himself during the season Cian that his training has been changed. Obviously he wasn’t managed properly. He’s been injured far too often for that. That’s the point.

Look at Arsenal’s track record with injuries. I’m sure they have lots of physios etc but they cannot keep players fit. Just having expertise on the books doesn’t guarantee results.

RVP comes to Ferguson – largely injury free season. Moyes takes over, RVP complains about his training and……look what happens.

Moyes earned the chance to manage team a year ago. He didn’t take it. In fact he blew it. And as a result he is likely getting the sack.

I am all for giving a manager time btu every single decision he has made with this, admittedly poor squad, has been disgusting:

Press conferences: A Joke. “We really enjoyed playing in the CL” “We’ll try and win next week”
Signings: 24m for Fellaini release clause. Nah – hell with that, give them 27m. Rooney – 300k AND the captaincy.
Tactics: Non existent. 82 crosses against Fulham.
Attacking ball: Non existent. 2 shots on target against Fulham

I haven’t seen a single positive aspect of his management all season. He has EARNED his sacking Cian.

And that was before he started getting injured. Moyes is clueless.

The fact is that Ferguson was worth about 20 points a season to United. United were always gonna suffer after he left but I don’t think anyone expected them to be as bad as they are. It just proves that he got far more out of his playing staff than anyone else. Moyes is obviously feeling the pressure and it’s rubbing off on the team. It’s a shame but he just isn’t up to a job as big as Managing Man United.

It’s a tough one but ultimately the correct decision I think. I like Moyse, he seems like a good bloke, but he was out of his depth. Yes he inherited a team of mostly has beens or never weres. With only Rooney and RVP anywhere near world class, but he failed to get the best out of them like Fergie had done.
He paid over the odds for Side show Bob and bought a decent player in Mata but played him out of position most of the time.

Plus he failed to attract big names last summer, that was a lot to do with him not having a big name in football. You only have to look at Everton and Liverpool to see what a good coach looks like. United’s style was one dimensional and predictable. Who will replace him I wonder.

As someone said above, its a slippery slope, thought he would get till xmas, the bigger egos and names (that are probably undermining him) in the dressing room will be gone this year aswell. The managerial merry go round is not something Utd fans will be used to. Van Gaal is a manager who moves a around lot and is in his 60′s. Mourinho would have been a bad choice. Klopp is probably the best bet, but will he move? Well Utd fans, all I can say is welcome to the world a lot of other fans have been used to for the last 25 years.

    @ Benny

A total simplification Benny as the likes of Martinez and Rodgers have shown. Managers can have a huge impact on a squad of decent players if they approach the game in the right way. Pool have one truly world class player, and a couple of excellent players followed by a fairly decent albeit thin squad. Look at the brilliant football they have been playing and 5 points clear at the top. Is their squad better than United’s?

Look at Everton’s approach. Look at the match yesterday.

Yes United’s players have been appalling and unprofessional. But it is up to the manager to get the best out of them and he has completely failed to do that.

For sure the squad was past it when he took it over but bringing in Fellaini was the first disaster. A typical mid table player, not going to bother Bayern, Real or Barca. Moyes has to go as I can’t see him winning the dressing room back after this media coverage. Klopp would be great but he recently committed to Dortmund and he seems to enjoy it there.

Right so it looks like he is going and being perfectly honest I would suggest it is not only because he failed to qualify for the Champions League (his bottom line) but throughout the season it appeared to me that he doesen’t have the gravitas required to be a Manchester United manager and this became obvious to the players at a very early stage, the very same players who played out of their skin for Sir Alex only one year previously. Edward Woodward needs to attract a top manager and provide him with the necessary funds to sort out central defence and midfield.
