David Haye: A career in pictures

As David Haye hangs up his gloves (for now anyway), we look back on his journey to the top.

FORMER WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT champion David Haye has officially confirmed his retirement from boxing — but not, as was noted in TheScore‘s offices, from his career of shameless self-promotion.

Before the Londoner has a chance to backtrack on his decision and grab all that lovely lucre on offer for one final showdown against a Klitschko, we’ve decided to move quickly in putting together a career retrospective.

Happy birthday, David. See you soon no doubt.

From his amateur days, Haye's talent stood out and he won silver at the 2001 World Amateur Boxing Championships.

When he turned pro, Haye's career got off to a flyer as expected. In only his second professional contest, he knocked out Saber Zairi in the final round of their fight in Sheffield.

He went on to win his first ten professional bouts before he was eventually knocked out by IBO Cruiserweight champion Carl Thompson in September 2004. It would be almost 7 years before Haye lost another fight.

In 2006, Haye retained his European cruiserweight title and set himself up for a shot at the WBC belt with this ninth-round knockout of Italy's Giacobbe Fragomeni.

When he finally got his shot against WBA and WBC cruiserweight champ Jean-Marc Mormeck, Haye didn't let it slip, knocking the Frenchman out in seven rounds in Paris.

As the new WBA and WBC champion, Haye's first title defence was a "Battle of Britain" against Welshman Enzo Maccarinelli. The Londoner won within two rounds, adding Maccarinelli's WBO belt to his collection.

With nothing left to prove at crusierweight, Haye added a few extra pounds and made the step up to heavyweight, passing his first test against America's Monte Barrett in five rounds.

Barrett was just a means to an end, however; that end was a fight against one of the Klitschko brothers. In an attempt to stoke up some controversy, Haye wore a t-shirt depicting himself with the severed heads of the Ukranians to a press conference with Wladimir in April 2009.

Before a fight against either Klitschko, however, Haye had to win a world title at heavyweight. He did that in November 2009 against Russian man-monster and part-time Yeti hunter Nikolai Valuev.

Haye's first heavyweight title defence came against the American John Ruiz in Manchester, which explains the Tevez-inspired promotional poster for the fight.

When he finally got his shot against a Klitschko however, it ended in disappointment as Wladimir defeated him by a unanimous decision in July of this year. Rematch, anyone?

  • Never liked the guy, he was more interested in the running his mouth than actually getting in the ring.

He did, however, make the heavyweight division interesting again for about 15 minutes and I can definitely see him coming out of retirement sooner rather than later.
