IF, LIKE US, you’ve been wondering what ever happened to David Bentley… here’s the answer.
A product of Arsenal’s youth academy, great things were expected of the winger as a youngster. In 2006, he joined Blackburn Rovers and, after two seasons, earned a £15m move to Tottenham.
Undoubtedly talented, Bentley was capable of producing moments of brilliance including a hat-trick for Blackburn against Manchester United and a ridiculous volley in Spurs’ 4-4 draw with Arsenal.
However, as he explains in a new interview with Des Kelly on BT Sport, the further his career progressed, the more he fell out of love with a game he describes as becoming increasingly “robotic”.
At times, he seemed more keen to have a laugh than knuckle down (remember his role in Harry Redknapp getting soaked?) and Bentley, capped 7 times by England, was let go by Spurs last summer having recently been on loan spells back at Rovers and in Russia with FC Rostov.
Still only 29, he is living in Spain and admits not missing his playing days.
