Ireland's Daryl Murphy is now the top scorer in the Championship

Another Irishman, Jay Tabb, got the other goal, as Ipswich secured a big win over their promotion rivals.

IRELAND STRIKER DARYL Murphy was on the scoresheet as high-flying Ipswich beat Middlesbrough 2-0 to go second in the Championship today.

Another Irish footballer, Jay Tabb, got the other goal, as Ipswich secured a big win over their promotion rivals, moving one point behind leaders Bournemouth in the process.

Murphy’s strike meant the Waterford native is now on 14 goals this season, and he is consequently the Championship’s top scorer, with Derby’s Chris Martin one behind him on 13.

The 31-year-old striker credited manager Mick McCarthy with his improvement in form in an interview last October, pointing to the fact that he was happy to play Murphy in his favoured forward role rather than on the wing, where he has often been deployed.

“When the gaffer came in on the first day, he told me he was going to play me as a striker, and he didn’t see me as a left midfielder, so that in itself gave me a little boost,” he said.

“I knew I’d be playing in my preferred role, and thankfully I’ve rewarded him with a few goals.”
