Gibson unwilling to kiss and make up with Trapattoni

The Everton midfielder’s international exodus will continue beyond the upcoming qualifiers with Sweden and Austria.

THE INTERNATIONAL CAREER of Darron Gibson could be put on hold until Giovanni Trapattoni’s reign ends after the midfielder again rejected a call-up by the Italian.

This afternoon, Ireland boss Trapattoni named an extended 29-man squad for the make-or-break World Cup qualifiers against Sweden and Austria this month with the Everton’s star name absent from the list.

The 25-year-old has not featured for Ireland since pulling out of panel which travelled to Kazakhstan last September – stating he didn’t “feel ready” to return after the disappointed of being overlooked in all three Euro 2012 defeats in Poland.

And Gibson, who is currently playing some of the best football of his career with the Toffees despite dealing witjh an ongoing thigh problem, is clearly still unwilling to play under the current regime six months on.

Speaking to the media this afternoon, Trapattoni said: “I was in touch with Darron – he said he is not ready again. I saw him in the last game in England , at this moment ‘I stay here’ he said.”

I saw him very very well last game and he said at the moment: ‘I wish now no need for controversy, I’m not ready’.”

One player who Trap does seem to have patched things up with is Stephen Kelly, who returned to the fold after missing out on the last two friendlies because of a spat with the management team prior to the Faroe Islands game in October.

While he confirmed that Kelly had been selected, the Ireland boss insisted he didn’t say sorry to the Reading man as there was no need to.

“I don’t need to apologise. He said he is available, after we will decide if he plays or don’t play – which tactics I need.”

With the domestic season kicking off around the country this evening, Trapattoni confirmed that he would be attending the Airtricity League Premier Division meeting between St Patrick’s Athletic and Drogheda United at Richmond Park.

He has been criticised in the past for the lack of attention paid to the League of Ireland and when the question was put to him about whether a player plying his trade here could possibly get a call-up, Trap pointed to the fact that many of the current squad are former LOI stars.

“We prefer players in the Premier League or Championship for experience, we must not forget experience, other experience. We have 5 or 6 players that come from the League of Ireland.”

  • Well if Paul Green was ahead of me in the pecking order I wouldn’t bother either

  • As much as Gibson is no real loss anyway. I do agree that someone like Paul green should never get in ahead of him on a major sporting event. Trap is trying to manage an international team like a club team…you can’t do that. Does not work. Pick your form players playing at the top level and motivate them and us the best tactics, very simple.

  • Has there ever been a Irish manager before who has fallen out with and alienated so many players ? Players who cam bring something to the Irish team. I don’t think so. They can’t all be wrong. The sooner this geriatric imbecile retires the better.

  • Trapp should have been fired after the euros. Ireland were an embarrassment.

  • Ridiculous behaviour. Gibson needs to grow up. I’d much rather have someone in there who wants to play for us.

  • I wonder if Denis O Brien still thinks Trap’s value for money! As regards Darren Gibson my own feeling is, he is just back in the Everton squad after an injury’ so give him a break, maybe he will team up with Seamus Coleman in the not to distant future.Seamus is coming along very nicely at all levels, Club & Country, Good luck today Seamus & Darren against Wigan! A goal each would do nicely!toffeegalore.com

  • Kelly like Gibson and others as far back as Andy Reid under Traps reign have been shafted.Kevin Foley named in the official Euro 2012 squad but then dropped before travelling and a very late call up Paul Green gets game time. Gibson sat on the bench even though had travelled A week earlier to Dublin to prepare for Euro 2012 tournament. No wonder players who have any pride wouldn’t want to be associated with a manager who treats players like dirt. Sooner Ireland’s beaten by Sweden and Austria the better for the long term future success of Irish soccer.new manager and new approach required.

  • Gibson is 110% right I always thought he was average at best anyway but at least he’s making a stand we need rid of that clown. Stephan Kelly should have followed his lead and also any other top league player (not that we have many) you know you must be playing some decent football if your an irish international and not getting picked it sounds rediculous but its true I believe any player that refuses to play for trap is actually doing there country a service the quicker he’s gone the better

    • Who do you want to run the team, the managers or the players?

The only reason people are supporting Gibson is because they want Trap gone. That’s fair enough, but we can’t have any player thinking they can pull out if matches if they don’t start. The manager runs the team. If a player doesn’t want to show up, we are better off without them rather than finding out that trait when the chips are down.

    • In any other situation I’d agree with you but not this one, Trappatoni dosnt give a monkeys about Ireland you might think I’m mad but I really think he’s trying his best to sabotage the team to try get sacked with a bumper pay off, I’ve never seen any manager fall out so frequently with his best players and so blatantly pick below average players ahead of players that are at least playing at a decent level he has no faith in any irish player that can play the ball and that shows in his shocking tactics the best ireland ever played under trap was against France when as the story goes the players threw out his tactics and played football the man is a cancer on irish football and the more players that boycott him the better I’ve stopped watching Ireland and I certainly won’t spend any money going to the Aviva to watch him make a mockery of us. I used to go to landsdown frequently to watch Ireland win loose or draw but I refuse to now. Red thumb me all u want I’m right.

    • You dont actually believe that? He’s an old school spertman, he doesnt care about the money. Who are we to question him? Ridiculous.

  • Does he expect Trapp to come and beg him to come back?

If so, he’ll be long retired before!! Unless you’re Xabi or Iniesta (Which you’re not) I wouldn’t hold my breath, Darron.

If you want to play for your country, you always make yourself available, don’t throw your toys out of the pram because of what happened at the Euro’s. Trapp made a lot of mistakes, but don’t expect an apology, Mr Gibson. Grow up and act your age.

Lets forget about Gibson, he is an average footballer currently playing below average. Yes we don’t have a huge amount of options but could certainly do without a sulky child from NI.

  • We need to spread more Players out across Europe if they need experience!Players shouldn’t be afraid to follow McGeady’s example and travel to places like Russia in search of Champions League football!

  • Trap’s delivered as regards the major tournaments, yes, the euro’s were a shambles and it was bitterly disappointing, BUT it is (was) a highly competitive competition and it was an achievement just getting there. We just missed out on a World Cup appearance as well. Sure, there has been a few casualties along the way, but we lost no truly great players. I don’t see us qualifying from this group and that’ll be that, overall I think he’s done a good job and stuck to his guns. Gets results, mostly yes! Progressive, hell no!

    • I’ll agree with that. One of the better comments I’ve seen here. I’ve always seen this group as blooding the next group for the 2016 qualifiers. We are dreing if we think we are going to finish ahead of Germany or Sweden. Two fantastic European sides with good tournament records. Germany infact have been on the cusp of success so.many times since 2006 and will be there or there abouts next July.

  • Gibson is a traitor, so. You get offered the green shirt, you take it & wear it with pride. Nothing else matters. Off back to Windsor Park with you so.
