Everton hope to have Gibson back this season

Midfielder needs surgery on ruptured cruciate ligament.

DARRON GIBSON COULD play again this season if his knee surgery proves to be a success.

The midfielder ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his right knee during Ireland’s win over Kazakhstan and is expected to miss several months.

But Everton manager Roberto Martinez revealed that there is no further damage and he is optimistic on Gibson’s recovery.

“The ACL is ruptured but the knee reacted well and nothing else is damaged,” Martinez said at today’s press conference.

The whole structure of the knee is perfectly fine. We look forward to seeing Darron back, hopefully this season.

A separate knee problem limited Gibson to just one substitute appearance in the league so far this season.

But he was brought back into the international fold by interim manager Noel King and Martinez was in Dublin on Tuesday to watch him partner Toffees team-mate James McCarthy in the Irish midfield.

“Darron is a sensational talent that is approaching the best moment of his career and, yes, it is a setback.

We have got a cruciate ligament injury to solve but the knee is fine. I know that Darron will come back stronger as a footballer after this incident.
