DARREN SUTHERLAND WAS one of Ireland’s finest boxing talents.
Alongside team-mates Kenny Egan and Paddy Barnes, the Dublin-born middleweight was one of three Irish athletes to win a medal at the Beijing Olympics of 2008 — earning a bronze after losing out to eventual gold medallist James DeGale.
He turned professional after returning from those Games and won his first four fights but, tragically, was found dead in his London apartment in September 2009.
The former DCU sports science student, who went back to school aged 20 having left to train as a boxer in England at 15, has been remembered by members of the university’s boxing club in a short documentary.
As well as interviews with Irish boxing coach Billy Walsh, Kenny Egan and Paddy Barnes, it also features members of the DCU’s staff and the boxing club and some original footage of Darren.
