THE IRISH SPORTING world was stunned to learn of the death of Darren Sutherland five years ago today.
One of Ireland’s brightest prospects, Sutherland earned a bronze medal at the Beijing Olympics in 2008 after losing to eventual gold medalist James DeGale in a thrilling semi-final.
Having moved to England to train at just 15, Sutherland went back to college at the age of 20 to study sports science and it his former DCU colleagues who made this poignant short documentary to commemorate the boxer.
Featuring interviews with Kenny Egan, Paddy Barnes and Billy Walsh among others, it remains a fitting memorial for the boxer who died aged just 27.
Though Sutherland was found to be suffering from depression prior to his death by hanging, the coroner – Dr. Roy Palmer – gave an open verdict in relation to his death.
