Danny Mills: Mancini will be sacked if City lose to Leeds

The former England full-back believes that the Manchester City manager will be looking for work soon.

FORMER MANCHESTER CITY defender Danny Mills believes that manager Roberto Mancini could be sacked if the Premier League champions lose their FA Cup fifth round clash with Leeds United.

City were knocked out of Europe before Christmas and trail neighbours Manchester United by 12 points in the league.

Last weekend’s defeat to Southampton allowed United to extend their lead into double figures and ex-England full-back Mills believes that the Italian is on borrowed time.

“Mancini is under pressure,” Mills told the BBC. “It looks like they have blown their chances of retaining the title.

“You wonder what would happen if they went out of the FA Cup against Leeds. I think Roberto Mancini goes.”

Even if City do advance to the FA Cup quarter-finals, Mills does not feel that Mancini will be in charge at the Etihad Stadium next August.

“Manchester United’s 12-point lead is too much. I think Mancini will go in the summer anyway if they don’t win the league.

“But, if they go out of the FA Cup at this stage, I could see the owners making a decision sooner than that.

“There’s a rumbling undercurrent of discontent at City,” added the 35-year-old.

“From the outside it all looks pretty and serene, but underneath there’s a bubbling inferno ready to explode.

“They have brought in Txiki Begiristain and the owners seem intent on creating this Barcelona model. They want success and that means Mancini is under a fair bit of pressure, especially after they failed miserably in the Champions League.”
