Daniel Agger says Liverpool may have over-achieved last season

The centre-back returned to his native Denmark in the summer after a breakdown in his relationship with Brendan Rodgers.

EX-LIVERPOOL DEFENDER Daniel Agger has suggested his former side over-achieved last term and that as a result, expectations were higher heading into the current campaign.

The Merseyside outfit have struggled to cope with the loss of both Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge – the former sold to Barcelona in the summer while the latter’s injury problems have ensured he’s made just 3 appearances since the season started.

Currently languishing in 11th place in the Premier League table, Brendan Rodgers’ side did manage a win against Stoke City on Saturday – their first league victory since October.

Speaking to Philip O’Connor of Reuters, Agger says the club’s second-place finish last season may have been misleading.

Maybe we over-achieved last year with the squad we had, so when we start a new season the expectations would be really, really high. It’s always difficult after such a great season.”

“Also in the Premier League now there’s not just one, two, three, four good teams. There’s seven, eight, nine, 10,” he said. “The other major difference from when I started is that everybody can beat everybody.”

How Liverpool could do with Agger currently. The team’s defensive issues have been well-documented and Rodgers may well be regretting his decision to allow the 29 year-old quietly return to his native Denmark in the summer. It was a breakdown in the pair’s relationship that led to the move though Agger still refuses to be drawn on what exactly happened.

“Of course there were reasons. I haven’t really shared my reasons with anyone – I have them, and that’s why I did what I did, and I’m happy with that. If I could write everything myself, I would have stayed there (at Liverpool) for the whole of my contract period, but I felt it wasn’t right. It was a mix of football and the feeling of my body not being able to play the physical games, but the most important thing was that I wasn’t happy going to training every day.”

“I had a great home there, my family enjoyed it, my kids enjoyed it there, they felt a big part of Liverpool. To be honest, I miss it.”
