MUNSTER HOOKER DAMIEN Varley has been cleared to play this weekend following a disciplinary hearing in Edinburgh this afternoon.
Varley was red carded in the 73rd minute of Munster’s 30-15 defeat to the Neath-Swansea Osprey’s at the Liberty Stadium on Saturday and there had been fears that he would face further action.
The card was issued by referee Dudley Phillips, on the advice of touch judge Rhys Thomas, for kicking out at the face of an opponent in an off the ball incident.
It is believed that no clear video evidence of the incident could be found and today’s statement from the RaboDirect Pro12 disciplinary committee said:
“Having listened to the testimony and reviewed all of the evidence available, the Committee decided to uphold the red card issued by the Referee, but believed that the offence did not warrant further sanction being imposed.
“However, they did warn the player as to his future conduct and the reckless nature of the incident.”
