JORGE MARTINEZ BOERO was fatally injured in a crash during the Dakar Rally in Argentina while another rider was left in intensive care a day later.
The rally, which is well-known for being extremely dangerous, takes place in temperatures of around 40 degrees celsius and claimed the life Argentinian Boero on Sunday.
The 38-year-old came off his bike between the cities of Mar del Plata and Santa Rosa de la Pampa according to BBC News, and died on the way to the hospital.
Then the following day, Sebastien Coue was found unconscious in remote sand dunes during the second stage of the race.
His body was exposed to the sun for an unknown period of time before he was treated in Teodoro J. Schestakow Hospital in the province of Mendoza and doctors had expressed concerned over his health.
However, he has managed to make a miraculous recovery after waking up from a coma, according to AFP news agency.
“His condition is developing well after he arrived in a state of severe hyperthermia,” Armando Dauverné said on Eurosport.
We have taken a tomography and all parameters are normal now. He has fully recovered and his spirits are high.”
This is the fourth year in a row that South America has hosted the race. The course begins in Argentina, passes through Chile and ends in Peru on January 15.
