Cycling Ireland rejects Pat McQuaid’s nomination for 3rd term as UCI president

The Irishman has come under heavy criticism of late.

CYCLING IRELAND WILL not nominate Pat McQuaid for a third term as UCI President, it has been confirmed.

An Emergency General Meeting was held this morning, with McQuaid’s nomination put to vote, and subsequently defeated by 91-74.

The result could potentially ruin McQuaid’s hopes of regaining the Presidency, with his nomination from Switzerland also facing a legal challenge.

McQuaid has come under heavy criticism in recent months for his handling of cycling’s various doping scandals, and in particular, the Lance Armstrong controversy.

In recent days, the Irishman has faced renewed criticism amid his bid to be President for a third term, with Britain’s Brian Cookson emerging as an alternative candidate.

Who are you referring to by ‘they’? All of the board members once again voted in favour of nominating McQuaid, as at the earlier botched meeting (excepting of course Anto Moran, though he is no longer on the board). This is the first time the federation took a general vote on the issue and the club delegates (whose protests are largely the reason why there was an EGM in the first place) voted against McQuaid by a solid majority.

The numbers don’t totally reflect the opinion of the club delegates because board members and heads of various commissions are awarded a vote, often in addition to a vote as a club delegate.

We can. And we call them ‘elections.’ We just don’t have them every time someone decides they want one.

After 5 years of lies, corruption, incompetence and stupidity. If you can clearly see you made a bad call why can’t you say, look you had a year, its not working and we don’t want to leave ye another 4 years to mess it up even more. In our democracy the politicians make the rules and have all the power.

That’s the way democracy works. You elect them. They have the power until the next election or they lose a vote of confidence. I you can convince 84 TDs to vote the government down, well then we will have an election. But the idea of holding an election every time someone disagrees with something a government does is unworkable. I think you’d find that even the leftist of the lefties would be against that. They quite like their €92,000 a year plus, in some cases, €1,250 a week tax free in expenses. It’s not a great system. But look around, it sure as hell beats most of the others in the world. Be patient. There are only two and a half years to go and then you can help to chuck them out.

Not liking the result doesn’t make it undemocratic. Maybe if the 40 per cent or so who don’t bother voting got up off their backsides it might make a difference

The 40 % dont bother voting because it never makes any difference. You have 2 choices ff or fg and no matter which one you choose you get the same policies, the same governance. So no real choice therefore no democracy. How much coverage do the new parties get in the media? Do you think rte want a real change?

I believe the UCI’s diificulties are more tied to the mischiefs of Armstrong and Verbruggen. Pat aint all bad, as Sean Kelly said earlier today, governed during a bad time but got through the biological passport which is progress for cycling. Anyway, hopefully Le Mond will get a chance.
