The Internet and social media is anonymous to a degree. Governments do not like the freedom this affords ordinary people. Just check the suggestions from senator Coghlan recently to have us register to use the internet using passports or pay to comment. Once the ability to post anonymously is gone it us gone forever. Don’t be fooled by non news stories like this which are being promoted by mainstream media and governments to convince us that giving up this power is in our interest as a society. The man being abused found out and confronted his abuser. Why do you feel anything more is required? Also he could just as easily have blocked the abuser as he admitted himself. The Internet serves a vital purpose and it is hugely important that it remains out of government control.

Agree 100% John, they have tries with the SOPA & ACTA to regulate & block us that way, now they are trying to do it in a more subtle way with bullying. Anonymous people wont stop bullying offline, its a kop out of trying to tackle the problem in the real world !

A troll is generally someone who will post a provocative comment for the purpose of obtaining a reaction. Which is different from posting an opinion which is against popular consensus but can often be difficult to differentiate from.

However, in the case of the three billy goats gruff, a troll is a big scary ugly creature under a bridge. “Comment trolls” are not scary but may be ugly.

I am not sure to be honest maybe a bit of both.

Harry… a provocative comment?? Surely that depends on a point of view… i am often called a troll on here… I don’t abuse or insult but just dont take the run of the mill j.ie opinion on everything… thus my comments often annoy people becasue they don’t underline their beliefs…

Declan, that’s what I said. Trolls post comments to be provocative while others genuinely don’t agree with popular opinion however it can be difficult to differentiate one from the other. Many people get labelled trolls although it is only their intention to offer their honestly held view.
