Cruel blow: Fahey ruled out of Euros, Green called up

The Birmingham City midfielder has failed to shake off a persistent groin problem and will miss next month’s finals.

Updated

KEITH FAHEY HAS been forced to withdraw from Ireland’s Euro 2012 squad due to injury.

The Birmingham City midfielder has been sidelined because of a problem with his groin and although he didn’t play any part in this afternoon’s 1-0 win over Bosnia Herzegovina at the Aviva Stadium, was expected to be fit for the finals.

There was no mention of the 29-year-old former St Patrick’s Athletic player in Giovanni Trapattoni’s post-match press conference but an FAI spokesperson tonight confirmed in a statement that he has been replaced by Paul Green.

“During the warm-ups at today’s match, Keith Fahey felt something not quite right. He was scanned following the match.

The FAI medical team have just received the results of the scan which showed unfortunately that his groin strain was persisting. The results were discussed with the player and he agreed that would not recover fully in time for Euro 2012.

“As a result, he is departing from the squad and Paul Green is being called in. Giovanni Trapattoni spoke to the player, who is very disappointed to miss out on Euro 2012, and told him that he remains part of his plans for the future.”

Open thread: Aiden McGeady or James McClean at Euro 2012 – who would you pick?

Trapattoni left ‘very, very satisfied’ by Irish performance in 1-0 win.

Coleman is a right sided mf/df. Green is centre mf just as Fahey. Only player that was going to be called up for that position. Feel sad for Fahey but i am sure Green will give a good account if called into action. I feel sad for all the useless posters on this site slagging any of our players off.

    Good man chuck.
    Wes Hoolahan; premiership regular.
    Paul Green; unattached.
€2 million euro a year for Trap joe soap is entitled to criticise.
I follow Ireland in all sports from Phillip Deignan in cycling to Niall O Brien in cricket, to the Irish footballers, as patriotic as they come so I am.

Yes, only a true patriot would react to news of an injury with unfunny sexual allegations about players and staff. How do you not have a staff job as a sports writer with insight and wit like that?

Paul Green doesn’t even have a club!!!! How the f**k can he be better than other players playing the the championship not to mind the premiership! I respect trap for what he has done for our team but this is pure stubbornness and stupidity! Disgusted is not the word!!!! Hope we don’t need to actually use him

Total shame about fahey. But this slagging off of the stand by list is pathetic . Mcshane had a good game today. Green won’t disgrace himself or us. So let’s cut this negative crap and get behind the squad

I think we’re allowed to discuss who we think should go and who shouldn’t? There was a few better options than green..watch when he gets the ball he’s about 10-15 seconds too long in deciding what to do with it. Good players don’t even have to think they know! Stephen Ireland would have been my choice:P
