That was the day Wirral Cricket Club were bowled out for three [3] against Haslington. The hapless top and middle order mustered zero runs and it was left to No.11 batsman Connor Hobson to score 1 not out. The best performer for Wirral was ‘extras’ on 2.
Unsurprisingly, Wirral C.C lost their weekend encounter by 105 runs. Speaking on Sky Sports this morning, Matt Garrett, who batted at nine before he was out LBW, revealed the extent of his side’s embarrassment.
He said, “Over tea we were fairly confident of chasing the runs down. We lost a couple of quick, early wickets, the pressure built and it went downhill from there… When you lose three, four, five wickets we were thinking ‘Oh, the worst could happen here’.
“By the time I was in, and out, we were eight down without troubling the scoreboard still. At that point we were starting to see the funny side; there was no other way of seeing it.”
Luckily enough for the Wirral players, their princely sum of three kept them out of the record books. Back in 1913 another English side were bowled out for 0.
