IRISH BOXING IS on the verge of a major coup with the news that Cuba’s Olympic pugilists will set up camp in Belfast in order to acclimatise before this summer’s London games.
Cuba is second only to the United States in the all-time medal table for boxing.
Of their 63 medals, they boast 32 gold and 19 silver. So, if they do bring their squad to Northern Ireland, then Belfast will play host to fighters who will certainly be contesting for podium places.
Irish-boxing.com reports that the illustrious squad is ‘on the verge’ of following the lead of Australia’s boxers by choosing the city. And writer Jonny Stapleton says the decision by both nations would have been made,
“after being impressed by the facilities available in Northern Ireland, but the Irish boxing teams success on the International stage would not have gone unnoticed either.”
Queen’s University Physical education centre is expected to provide the location for the Olympians, though the deal has not yet been fully finalised.
