O'Brien the scoring star as Cork defeat Waterford in Munster intermediate opener

The teams met in today’s first game at Semple Stadium.

Cork 1-21
Waterford 3-9

CORK MAINTAINED THEIR impressive record at intermediate hurling level with a six-point win over Waterford in today’s Munster quarter-final tie in Semple Stadium.

The Rebels dominated the second-half with centre-forward Peter O’Brien outstanding as he chalked up 0-13 from play and placed balls throughout the course of the game.

Cork had been in front narrowly at the break by 1-9 to 2-4 after recovering from conceding two early goals to Waterford, who had Dungarvan duo Gavin Crotty and Ryan Donnelly on the mark.

Cork also found the net in the early stages through Jamie Wall and the teams were level at 2-3 to 1-6 by the 20th minute mark before Cork pulled ahead by the half-time.

Waterford received a huge boost after the break when Donnelly got in for his second goal of the game with a superb finish past Cork goalkeeper Richie Cunningham. With captain Killian Fitzgerald extremely accurate from placed balls and Thomas Ryan floating over a sublime point from the wing, Waterford edged into a 3-8 to 1-11 lead by the 40th minute.

But Waterford’s challenge then collapsed as Cork took control and reeled off ten points without reply. O’Brien was the scorer in chief while Michael O’Sullivan, Ronan Crowley and Colm Spillane all chipped in with points during this time as well.

It meant that Cork were 1-21 to 3-8 clear approaching full-time and a late score by Fitzgerald for Waterford rounded off proceedings. Cork now advance to a semi-final meeting with Clare on June 15th.

Scorers for Cork: Peter O’Brien 0-13 (0-8f), Jamie Wall 1-1, Colm Casey 0-2, Cormac Murphy, John Cronin, Michael O’Sullivan, Ronan Crowley, Colm Spillane 0-1 each.

Scorers for Waterford: Killian Fitzgerald 0-7 (0-5f), Ryan Donnelly 2-0, Gavin Crotty  1-0, Tommy Ryan 0-1.
