WATERFORD AND CORK will meet again after their Munster senior hurling quarter-final finished 1-21 apiece at Semple Stadium today.
The sides will have to replay on Sunday June 8th after a frenetic finale saw Seamus Prendergast look to have grabbed the winner for Waterford before Patrick Horgan tied the teams with a pointed free.
Waterford held a commanding 0-13 to 0-7 lead at half-time and looked firmly in control after Austin Gleeson’s excellent solo goal put them 1-16 to 0-11 up in the second half.
The 2013 All-Ireland minor winner struck a sensational goal as he raced in from the left wing and billowed the net. At that juncture Waterford seemed set for victory with Pauric Mahony, who struck 0-11 overall, impressive in his free taking while Jamie Nagle, Michael Walsh and Tadhg Burke had all starred around the middle third.
However Cork substitute Bill Cooper responded shortly thereafter with a goal from close range as he netted after a scramble that ensued when Patrick Horgan’s fierce shot was saved.
That 48th minute strike left Cork adrift by 1-17 to 1-11 but Mahony converted a free to restore Waterford’s seven-point advantage soon after.
Waterford still were in command as they lead by six points by the 55th minute but then Cork launched a dramatic fightback. Horgan was in inspirational form after being switched to the half-forward line while newcomer Alan Cadogan sparkled.
Cork had cut the gap to the minimum, 1-19 to 1-18, with eleven minutes remaining before Waterford quelled their revival and went back in front by two through Mahony’s pointed free.
Finally Cork drew level courtesy of points by Horgan and Cooper before a dramatic finale saw Prendergast and Horgan swapped points to leave the teams all square.
