CORK HAVE NAMED an unchanged side for Saturday’s All-Ireland football quarter-final against Dublin.
The Rebels return to Croke Park for the second time in eight days but despite the quick turnaround, manager Conor Counihan is set to go with the same 15 which started against Galway.
Counihan has been criticised this season for naming “dummy teams” in the run-up to games and then making changes shortly before throw-in.
He caused a stir last week when he left Ken O’Halloran, Noel O’Leary, Paudie Kissane, Fintan Goold, Paul Kerrigan and Donncha O’Connor on the bench against Galway, and then surprised people again when Cork started the game as named in the programme.
Aidan Walsh, scorer of the crucial goal in that one-point win, remains at centre-forward while Daniel Goulding, Ciarán Sheehan and Brian Hurley — who combined for nine points last week — make up the full-forward line again.
Cork (SFC v Dublin): Alan Quirke (Valley Rovers); Eoin Cadogan (Douglas), Michael Shields (St Finbarr’s), Thomas Clancy (Clonakilty); Damien Cahalane (Castlehaven), Graham Canty (Bantry Blues), James Loughrey (Mallow); Alan O’Connor (St Colum’s), Pearse O’Neill (Aghada); Mark Collins (Castlehaven), Aidan Walsh (Kanturk), John O’Rourke (Carbery Rangers); Daniel Goulding (Eire Óg), Ciarán Sheehan (Eire Óg), Brian Hurley (Castlehaven).
Subs: Ken O’Halloran (Bishopstown), John Mc Loughlin (Kanturk), Tomás Clancy (Fermoy), Noel O’Leary (Cill na Martra), Jamie O’Sullivan (Bishopstown), Paudie Kissane (Clyda Rovers), Andrew O’Sullivan (Castletownbere), Fintan Goold (Macroom), Patrick Kelly (Ballincollig), Paul Kerrigan (Nemo Rangers), Donncha O’Connor (Ballydesmond).
Allthough I think Dublin have the better squad and I personally think they are the best team in the country at the moment I have a feeling Cork will win this one.
With players good enough to beat Dublin and no pressure I think Cork have nothing to loose. Dublin go in as favourites and have everything to lose.
That said all I am hoping for is a good game. Will Conor C go man to man?
I think corks half forward line will ce vital. Dublin have a lightning fast half back line who are not shy about attacking. Id say Dublins only concern is in midfield.they were destroyed against meath.
Cant wait for a great weekend of GAA. Best of luck to both teams.
It’s the draw i didn’t want p.
I don’t think it’s fair that the five under 21 players in our starting 15 are being touted as having everything to lose against a quality team like cork though.
This is very much a 50-50 match in the eyes of anyone who knows the game.
I’m already dreading the Dublin “choked” nonsense that the haters will be beating on about on Saturday night if cork win in their shameless way.
I’m still confident if we perform we’ll come through though by a point or two. If not this year we will next year
What “shameless” way are you talking about?
You don’t think it’s shameless for 31 counties to constantly say the same thing every time Dublin lose a game and kick us when were down?
No other county is shown the same lack of class.
Shameless
Because no other county shows the same lack of class in victory.
The arrogance of some of the Dublin fans is shocking! “hill 16 is Dublin only”, the notion that Croke Park is Dublin’s stadium, the Dublin hurling experts that have cropped up in the last 14 months.
You say Cork win in a shameless way, sounding like Spillane talking about Ulster football, I asked what was shameless about how Cork play football?
My comment wasn’t about cork. I meant gaa fans in general.
The rest of your comment is a sweeping generalisation that I’ve come to expect from far too many country people when addressing my county.
Every county has good and bad folk. I’ve been at every championship defeat Dublin have suffered since 2007 and kerry fans aside my family and I suffered a nasty experience of some kind on each occasion after the final whistle at the hands of opposition fans.
When Dublin won the all Ireland two years ago the first thing I did was shake the hand of and commisserate with the kerry man beside me. I saw plenty of the same going on all around me.
Like too many your resentment of Dublin is born out of jealousy.
(Half my family are from cork by the way, I have no ill will towards cork at all)
John,
Dublin are favourites for this game, and rightly so, whether you like it or not. I know you like to down play expectations on here!!
Dublin have some weaknesses as shown in the Meath game and with any group of young lads in their first season there is the potential for under performing, but there is nothing to suggest that Cork should win this game.
Dublin, while having plenty of genuine supporters, have more bandwagon fans purely down to population and proximity to games. They also have huge media exposure which is obviously where the hype comes from, and so you are up on a pedestal to be knocked off. That’s just the nature of the beast. The same beast that allows you warrant a €1m a year sponsorship deal from Vodafone and the like… So swings and round a bouts there wouldn’t you say.
As for hassle or abuse after a game… In 20 years going to Meath Dublin games I have never had a cross word said after a match with our fiercest rivals, or any County for that matter, outside of the usual slagging and banter. That is just one more reason why I love this game. I am very surprised to hear that you regularly have this experience?
Anyway I will be watching the game with interest and hoping for a good game. As much as I like the way this Dublin team play football, it is just not in me to shout for you… It’s just not :-)
David, i’m sorry you feel Dublin fans have a ‘lack of class in victory’. I’m a season ticket holder in both codes and regularly witness Dublin fans gracious in victory. For once i’m choosing not to take (too much) offence to such a comment as i know myself and most Dublin fans do not behave that way. Every county has their share of ‘bad’, my friend fromKilkenny had a terrible experience with a group of Cork fans after the game at the weekend but we are both well aware they are not representative of the majority of Cork fans and would never tar them all with the same brush and i would hope other counties would think twice before doing that to us.
The opinion of those ‘Hill 16 is Dublin only’ fans most definitely does not represent me or the majority of Dublin fans.
Best of luck to both teams this weekend and next & may we all be gracious in victory and/or defeat.
Which is why I said “some” Dublin fans.
I realise that the majority of them are fine, I have several cousins that are Dubs, born and bred, but we don’t like to talk about them. You will surely agree that the media exposure Dublin get is way over the top, RTE can’t seem to shut up about them…
My point about the hurling is valid. Dublin never really had a fan base in that code, not the same as Cork, Kilkenny and other traditional hurling counties, but I know in my heart that Dublin will outnumber Cork in the stands in 9 days time, nature of the beast I know.
I’m aware that every team has their bad eggs in the crowd, the “welcome to the capital, Langers” banner from the 2010 semi final springs to mind, but given the population, Dublin seem to have more bad eggs than others.
P.s. I know a few people that have gone to Hill 16 for a Dublin match, the abuse they got was vile!
Aaand, there’s that Dublin arrogance. Every county gets it’s fair share of abuse. Trust me, I know all about it being from Cavan. Most take it as friendly banter. The you are just jealous comment, silly.
There’s nothing friendly about having a drink thrown over you by over zealous fans celebrating while telling you to enjoy the five minute walk home ya Dublin knacker.
All Ireland semi final last august. Pardon my arrogance!!
I don’t know what goes on up on the hill, haven’t been up there in years. I was in a family section of the cusack stand.
Like I say every county has them.
Since I don’t believe Dublin and Cavan haven’t played in championship in my entire life (that I recall anyway) the fact that a Cavan man has accused Dublin fans of arrogance without any first hand experience has proven my point 100 percent.
Every team has a big game in them, and Cork’s could be on Saturday against the Dubs. Class players, and with no pressure on them, I think Cork could prevail.
Clash of the Capitals?
Dublin aren’t playing Antrim :p
