Cork and Tipperary claim Munster minor hurling victories

It was a good night for the Rebel and Premier minor hurling sides.

CORK AND TIPPERARY claimed the spoils in the opening games of the 2013 EBS Munster minor hurling championship tonight.

Cork triumphed by 3-15 to 2-14 against Clare in a game they hosted in Páirc Uí Rinn.

While Tipperary enjoyed a successful trip to Waterford where they emerged with a 2-18 to 1-15 victory in Walsh Park.

The two winning sides now advance to the semi-final stage on June 26th after tonight’s results.

Whereas Clare and Waterford must now travel the backdoor route and prepare to face each other next Wednesday night if they are to maintain their interest in this year’s championship.

Cork 3-15
Clare 2-14

Cork claimed a four-point win on home soil in Páirc Uí Rinn this evening in their encounter with Clare.

Cork trailed by three points at half-time but had drawn level, 3-9 to 2-12, with 13 minutes remaining.

The Rebels finished strongly to claim the spoils as they outscored Clare by 0-6 to 0-2 in the finale.

Cork got off to a dream start with two goals inside the opening minutes from Pa O’Callaghan – from a penalty – and Anthony Spillane sending them into a remarkable 2-2 to 0-0 lead.

However Clare rallied superbly with Clarecastle’s Bobby Duggan, a key figure in the Banner side that reached the All-Ireland minor semi-final last year, raising two green flags before the interval and they overhauled the Rebels to lead 2-8 to 2-5 at the break.

Cork got an early second-half boost when O’Callaghan grabbed his second goal of the match and the Ballyhea attacker followed that up with some vital points in the last quarter.

Peter Kelleher also made a noticeable difference when switched to midfield as Cork fashioned a four-point victory by the final whistle.

Tipperary 2-18
Waterford 1-15

Reigning All-Ireland champions Tipperary got their title defence off to a positive start tonight in Walsh Park against Waterford.

The Premier enjoyed a successful away trip in a game where Waterford had opened brightly.

Patrick Curran, the star of Dungarvan Colleges All-Ireland title win last Saturday, was in free-scoring form in the first-half as the Deise lead by 0-9 to 0-5 at one juncture.

But Tipperary rallied with Josh Keane finding the net for them and despite a goal by Waterford corner-forward Michael Kearney, it was the winners who lead by 1-10 to 1-9 at the break.

Waterford drew level at 1-12 apiece in the third quarter but Tipperary kicked for home in style in the closing stages, spurred on by Keane’s second goal of the match.

Golden-Kilfeacle club man Keane finished the match with 2-9 to this name while Willie Connors and Conor Lanigan were others to catch the eye in the scoring stakes for a Tipperary side that finished with six points to spare on the scoreboard.
