A SUPERB GOAL late on from Sergio Aguero saved Argentina’s blushes on Friday night as the Copa America kicked off in impressive style.
The hosts opened their campaign against Bolivia, who took a shock lead early in the second half having held their opponents scoreless before the break. It had been all one-way traffic in the first half but while Argentina had plenty of possession, they failed to get any clear shot on target.
The break through finally came when Jhasmani Campos hit a low corner into the box before Edivaldo Rojas back-heeled the ball past the Argentine defence and keeper Sergio Romero.
Argentina equalised with only 13 minutes left on the clock. Nicolas Burdisso played a key role, chesting down a cross from Marcos Rojo and allowing Aguero to catch the ball sweetly and volley home to level the match.
The Atletico Madrid striker did have a chance to claim all three points for his sides minutes later but his effort brought a fine save from keeper Carlos Arias.
“They put men behind the ball, parked the bus and we could not find a way through,” Barcelona star Lionel Messi said afterwards. “It’s not what we were hoping for and we are sad. Now we know the matches we have to come in the group are the ones we just have to win.”
