SHAY GIVEN JOINED Middlesbrough on loan from Aston Villa last week and was delighted to keep a clean sheet on his debut over the weekend.

Last night, the former Ireland number one started between the sticks at Pride Park where Derby County, these days under former Boro boss Steve McClaren, were the hosts.

The visitors had to play an hour with ten men after Jake Buxton was booked for a second time and conceded on the stroke of half-time to Chris Martin.

They then drew level through Dean Whitehead on 74 minutes and looked to be heading for a respectable point.

However, with 20 seconds of normal time remaining, substitute Conor Sammon someone managed to get a touch on Will Hughes’ flick-on after a chipped pass from Jeff Hendrick to take the ball over the head of Given for a scrappy winner.

As the game has finished I’ve just gone up to him and he has said the same thing to me: ‘How has that gone in?” Sammon told the club afterwards.

“It’s crazy the way it did go in and it was very unlucky for the Middlesbrough left-back who made a great challenge. I’ll take any goal like that in the dying stages of the game where we’re neck-and-neck and pushing for a goal.”

It is the Ireland striker’s fourth goal of the season but there has been speculation that he could leave in January.
