MUNSTER SCRUMHALF CONOR MURRAY has been cited for striking Glasgow Warriors player during his side’s 13 — 6 win on Friday.
The citing is for ‘striking with the elbow’ and Murray will have to face an independent RaboDirect Pro12 disciplinary commission later this week to explain, or defend, himself. If he is found guilty, Murray could miss between two to five weeks of rugby.
The commission has the power to ban the Irishman up to 52 weeks if the offence is deemed ‘top end’. Murray is now in serious danger of missing Ireland’s November internationals.
The citing comes quick on the heels of a statement that was released by Warriors following their home defeat. It read, “We believe a dangerous act of foul play was committed by a Munster player against Niko Matawalu during [Friday's] game at Scotstoun.”
Matawalu has also been cited for an alleged bite on Donncha O’Callaghan. The Munster lock was incensed at what he perceived to be a bite from the scrumhalf in the final minutes of Friday’s league encounter.
Another Munster lock, Donnacha Ryan, has been linked with a move to Top 14 side Perpignan. Ryan was reportedly spotted at the French club’s league win over Bordeaux at Stade Aimé Giral this weekend. The 29-year-old is out of contract at the end of this season.
